How to change thermostat on Omega2.5TD
« on: 02 October 2007, 10:13:41 »

Hi I am a new member I have just bought a 97 omega 2.5TDelite estate
My most immeadiate problem is I think low mpg ( 27) driving it like a baby
My previous 2,5TD GLS estate did 33+
I am fairly sure the stat is stuck open...for the following reasons
It takes ages to warm up
It runs between 85(1st mark on guage)& 90 ( last one did 95 steady)
If you start up from cold the top hose to the rad starts to get warm st away
Also the main engine fan( I presume it is the big one between the engine and the rad) does spin as soon as you start up even from cold ( but the same happens with the other motor) I have ...very carefully pressed a stick on it while it is spinning and it is fairly easy to stop it. I gather that it is driven by a viscous coupling and that these are prone to seize.....should this fan only come on at high temperatures? Can I stop it from starting to spin when is should not ( ie engine cold)
If somebody can give me an idea as to how easy it is to change the stat..iI would be grateful....I cant even see where it is!
I think that if I can get it warming up quicker my mpg will improve

Cheers  Plus2

My first auto est ran between 81 & 90 & did 33mpg. My elite runs at over 95, sometimes up to 100, also does 33mpg. Very little city commutes, The mid is not reliable 1st gave 38mpg, 2nd gave 57mpg current reads 29mpg. I guess your gls is a manual.
What did you pay for the elite?

Hi Mpg is a problem with the 2.5 td. I have an auto and that I calculate does far less than 20 around town. I use it in France rather frequently and never ever achieve 30 mpg. The themperature on mine is anything but constant so I too may have a thermostat problem. Has anyone ever produced a workshop manual for these vehicles?

Thanks for the feedback, I have done an accurate check on mpg today filled back to brimful...and i got 30.2mpg ( computer told me it was 27.5 so not quite as bad as I expected! I have been driving it very gently though.
i still think I have got a stuck open stat. I paid £1500 ...its done lots of miles

Hey thanks for the reply.....where is the damn stat I bought one today from a motor factor. He recconed the 2.5 Td was not a BMW engine and gave me one labelled rover ( I think it did go in the rangerover?)  If somebody has done a step by step instruction on how to change it (like the one for the V6 on this site) please tell me where it is.
Does your main fan spin from cold startup?

I removed my viscous ages ago. Only BMW could be so stupid to use them. But yes, viscous always runs.

Remove viscous and its cowling (after removing 'turbo diesel' bit)
See hose from bottom of rad to block at front near viscous mounting (waterpump)? See the 3 bolts that hold the plastic 'elbow' on? Undo them and remove. Stat there.

Hey thanks for that. Did you replace the viscous fan with an electric one...?
If so could you reccomend a make.

No, I simply slung the stupid useless piece of BMW crap in the boot (the boot on my tractor is a 'spare parts storage area'!).

Why the hell BMW are still fitting viccy fans is beyond me...
