ive got all the books etc that came with the car when he bought it so not sure on the code. If i cant use it then thats ok. it just niggles me that if its just a case of finding which is + ,Neg, Lspeaker r/speaker etc then i could easily wire it up. Not going to buy one as i have a single head unit now. Just said to him dont drive it into the scrapyard with a changer in the boot......seemed madness!

ok fair enough. it hasnt cost anything so it can go in the bin!!! What is the prob then??? im sure this was linked to a bose system of some kind as the stereo did pack some nice sound for a standard 11yr old instalation.

I have part of the lead which plugs into the back of the changer but im not sure which wires are which??? There seems to be 12 pins with R. A. Is he still driving it around without and PAS?
NO!!!! it doesnt really go enough to worry about driving it down the road! We are lucky that we live in a very rural area where we dont have to go on public roads to try the "next CURE"!

dont think its gonna be a sensor fault
if its backfiring its cos either the plug leads are on wrong or the inlet valves are open at the wrong time. valves can be down to the cam timing being out or are sticking open
does it run perfectly when its warm or is it just better than cold?
The plug leads are in the correct places as they have never been touched!! Yes once warm or left to idle for about 10 mins it runs great!
Just if its cold and he tries to drive off then it doesnt want to know at all!

no havnt checked that sensor!! we carried out the paperclip test to find codes for maf crank sensor and immobiliser sensor (why we dont know)
changed the 2 suspects to no avail!
Trouble is the guy doesnt want to waste money on it trying to cure the "unknown"
And at the end of the day its probably worth more broken for spares than complete!

Hello again everybody. Right we are now at a point of either finding a cure or breaking the car for spares....This is the latest!
New crank sensor fitted....made no difference!
New Maf sensor fitted......made no difference!
Basically to update people on here the story is like this!
2.5v6 cdx estate 1997 poor starting problems.
The car will start on the turn of the key but idles very very rough untill the car warms up. When and only when its warm will it pull away ok.
After starting,  if you try to rev it at all, you get  lots of backfiring into the airbox to the point of it moving the top part of airbox quite a lot!
I mentioned before that if you hold your hands over the maf sensor and restrict it leaving a 10pence size hole for the air to go through it will settle the idle nicely. I have since found that if i squeeze the hose going into the ICV this gives the same results!
Now before, people have mentioned that doing this cant do any better a job than the butterflys would do on there own. I beg to differ as what we are essentially seeing here is that if the airflow into the plenum is restricted before it passes any more sensors then maybe the ECU can adjust itself for the airflow/fuel conditions??
Looking at the bigger picture we are faced with i can only see that on start up the car is drawing far to much air into the plenum and the ECU cannot cope to make its adjustments. Crazy i know but what else could it be??
come on you knowledgeable lot....hit the nail on the head!

Right tonight was planned on finding out which crank sensor he has fitted to his car. Whilst the bonnet was up he started the car and it ticked over as it should. It sat idling ok for about 15seconds then went all lumpy and sounding like it was running on about 4cyl's (2.5v6) My mate then lifted off the airbox tube just above the airflow meter and without doing anything else he gently covered the air passage going through the gauze with his hands. he continued to resctrict the air volume until he had an opening of approx 10p piece and then the engine started to increase the revs on its own then when it sounded smoother he withdrew his hands and it ticked over on what sounded like all 6 cyl's. This continued to a point that he drove the car home.
People who have followed this thread will probably remember i have done a paper clip test and got 73,19,145.
Now before we go and source a new crank sensor what of the above would have anything to do with it???? Ie trying not to waste money on things which wont help!
Cheers for the forth coming swift replies!!!! :)

No  other warning. i asked him about driving it hard before or after as i'd seen other peoples posts with the same type of problem. it would seem it just comes up for no apparant reason (although there is) I looked in his book (comes in glovebox) but it didnt say how to check for fluid level! Just mentions if you see this error displayed it needs to go into dealers for fixing.

Marks...i smile at your knowledge...thanks mate. I think we will try fuse 14.
Ok im going to go with your crank sensor advise. It will probably be next weekend before i know if its cured the car as he doesnt have much money to spend on it. but thank you again for the swift response.
By the way "auto gearbox" comes up every now and again on the check panel....the gearbox was fully reconditioned about 8 months before he bought the car with reciepts for over £1200....any ideas on that?
