done paperclip test....results are in!
« on: 18 January 2008, 21:02:29 »

Right some may remember "johnislost" had some issues with his omega. I have carried out the clip test to reveal 73,19,145 coming up. 73=air flow sensor...this we know is playing up and plan on changing it asap. 19= crank sensor, ie car was not running so i assume we ignore this one. Now 145= incorrect immobiliser signal received. Any idea's on this last one as the car starts fine with the same key it has had since he got the car. It locks remotely and alarmes etc. Im not sure if this isnt a red herring as per the crank sensor! Any suggestions guy's?Also im trying to look into the PAS issues. Basically he doesnt have any help from the pump. On viewing, the pump seems to turn with the belt and the fluid is to the full mark. Anybody aware of a problem/cure with these? (2.5v6 cdx estate 1997) It worked perfect until he carried out a tight turn in the road on full lock and hasnt worked since. Ive tried turning it lock to lock as per haynes manual to remove air but no joy.
Cheers in advance.
Paul.

No......31 is engine not running.....19 is crank sensor goosed.....and when goosed it often throws a MAF fault and immobiliser fault to!

So change the crank sensor.

19 - Incorrect RPM signal (i.e. fault)
31 - No rpm signal (i.e. engine not turning)

Just thought I would add the above whilst you are replying incase it was part of the question you might ask in response  :y

thank you for the swift reply. I had heard that 31 was to be ignored but put 2 and 2 together after downloading the codes from on here. Ok i will look into the crankshaft sensor with him. The reason we think maf is dodgy is that the car would not start at all...just crank over and over. Then a friend with more car electrical knowledge squeezed the tube coming out of the airbox so as to "richen" the mixture and basically fool the ecu and the car started. After a bit of pulling blowing onto it and basically trying to clean it up without further damage it has run perfectly ok since. Also is there any way of getting eml light to go of after we fix the problem?  fuse 14...where  is that located please?

Sometimes a little knowledge is a bad thing, this is a good case.

Squeezing the tube will make bugger all difference, the MAF measures the airflow and on idle or when cranking the airflow is bugger all any way......remember that having the throttles shut does the same thing!

So it was basicaly coincidence, I suspect the crank sensor wiring is failing and the initial cranking disturbed it enough to work for a while.

When the fault is fixed the light will go out of its own accord, the fault codes will remain stored in the ECU for 20+ clean starts (some remain after this)

Fuse 14, in the cabin fuse box under the steering wheel, see here;

Its a ball and worm setup.....so if he did it would probably not turn at all.....its possible that the variable valve used for the variable assist setup used on the V6 is stuck but, check the fuse first as its the more likely cause!

Marks...i smile at your knowledge...thanks mate. I think we will try fuse 14.
Ok im going to go with your crank sensor advise. It will probably be next weekend before i know if its cured the car as he doesnt have much money to spend on it. but thank you again for the swift response.
By the way "auto gearbox" comes up every now and again on the check panel....the gearbox was fully reconditioned about 8 months before he bought the car with reciepts for over £1200....any ideas on that?

Any other symptoms when it occurs.....loss of drive for a short period when it changes from 2 to 3 before a clunk and the warning?

If not, then check the fluid level as per teh guide in the maintenance section.

As for the crank sensor, check the plug type before purchasing one (thre are two types), they are a reasonable price on ebay (30sih quid) and install it as per the guide here:

No  other warning. i asked him about driving it hard before or after as i'd seen other peoples posts with the same type of problem. it would seem it just comes up for no apparant reason (although there is) I looked in his book (comes in glovebox) but it didnt say how to check for fluid level! Just mentions if you see this error displayed it needs to go into dealers for fixing.
