Omega General Help / Re: smoke from the engine bay. never good
« on: 19 June 2008, 19:56:52 »
I had a similar problem with my 2.5, spoke to pox hall, apparently the later models have thicker seals to cure this known problem. However my leak from the cam covers seems to have been caused by the pattern part set supplying the thinner earlier type!!!

Easier way to see if the covers are leaking (if pulling a plug lead is difficult is to wipe around the heads at the join with the cam covers and see what oil there is (I cleaned mine then had a test run....)
Then re wipe later, if you can feel the oil, you almost certainly have leaky cam cover gaskets!!!

Ooodles of smoke is scary, I was stopping at traffic lights etc and loads of smelly smoke emitted from the engine bay!!!

BTW if you change the cam cover gaskets remember to use some sealant at the front and back!!!

good luck

Omega General Help / Re: omega intermittent starting problem
« on: 16 July 2008, 10:03:42 »
Hi all, I now have a similar problem (99 2.5v6), intermittent starting. No fault codes beyond the usual, no flashing from Eng Mgmnt light.  Car just turns but no firing. :-[

I have had this before, when I removed the crank sensor and cleaned (it being covered in oil), but never been able to prove where the fault lies!!! >:(

Any advice greatfully received (note: I have: replaced cam cover seals, recently replaced coil pack and HT leads, plugs etc), also changed crank sensor about 3yrs ago.

Thoughts?? Crank sensor again? Imobiliser? Fuel pump relay???

Cheers

Oh I forgot to add, it cranks over OK and runs fine once going... just an annoying failure to fire (and its very :-[ embarrassing sitting in the car while it whirs round without firing!!)

Thanks N

Dear all

A few weeks ago I cured a chronic oil leak (camshaft covers) on my 1999 2.5CDX auto Omega estate that included cleaning lots of oil from plugs wells etc.

After this all went well, except now i get intermittent starting problems (hot and cold).
Based on advice on the forum i have checked:
- HT leads, Coil Pack, Paperclip test all OK, no faults found.

I still have the problem. The only thing I can suspect is I have twice removed the crank sensor, inspected and cleaned lots of oil from it!!!

Could this be the problem???

If so How do i remove the excess oil that is obviously swimming round between the flywheel and autobox (I could not see a drain plug??)

Any help or suggetions greatfully received... I love my 'bomber omega estate'  ;Dbut my wife is keen for me to 'sell' now the car is acting up >:(!!!!

Thanks N

Hi all, further to my previous post, paper clip test results:
12 12 132 132 132 132 12 12 (running)
12 12 132 132 132 132 31 31 31 12 12 (ign on/ notrunning)

Any advice greatfully received, no flashing dash lights, only non starter the other day (it started eventually, i did clean a very oily crank sensor if this could have been the problem).

how longs do faults remain logged??

thanks.. Nigel

Omega General Help / 2.5 CDX non start/oil leak and cambelt!!!
« on: 10 June 2008, 13:31:36 »
Dear all

Firstly thanks for a great site, this really helped me last year when refitting the cambelt and rebuilding the heads after tensioner failure!!!

However since I carried this out it appears I had the wrong sort of Cam cover seals supplied (thin ones?) that have subsequently leaked oil both into the spark plug recesses and all over the sides of the engine and exhausts (lots of smoke etc!!)

I cleaned this all up and changed these gasket seals last weekend (including small dabs of sealant front and back) and all was well.  The engine went back together well with no starting or ECU issues.........

However there was still some smoke which I believe was the residual burning off (this seems to be improving) and after a few runs i found the car would not start.  I tried combinations of locking/unlocking, wiggling under bonnet connectors etc, but the car just turned over.  It eventually fired and drove home ok, no problems.

Last night I cleaned underneath the engine and also took out the crank sensor (it was coated in oil).

So questions:
- Would an oily crank sensor cause non starting???
- Is it worth doing a paper clip test to determine what may be the fault?

I am very greatful for advice.

regards Nigel
