Another very simple thing to try is scrub the roof seal with soapy water. I left mine for a good while maybe nearly as long as yours and all that was wrong with it was that it was weathered into the roof ..... tight - a bit of soaking of the seal and it started to open - my sunroof indication lights have been working intermittently since I bought it 5 years ago and it hasn't affected it's performance.

When you try it with the switch can you feel or even hear it trying to work?

Edit: have just read your first post so ignore above!!!! :o
Good hint, and valid question about apparent power consumption.
No sign of any power consumption (lights dim, noise, hum, relay click, etc).
When I do get around to cranking it open to reset the controller, I shall lube the rails and scrub the seals.  Good point.

Where is the control box for the sunshine roof?
Part of motor assembly, all above plastic panel.  Actually, part of plastic panel iirc
Thanks, TB, that's a job I can do when it's too wet to get under the car for the gearbox investigation.

Has the battery been disconnected recently?? Hae you tried simply resetting the sunroof controls?
Good point, SoS/MC, I have no information that the roof has worked since the battery was changed a year ago.  However, with it not working at the moment, I may have to hand-crank it to get some distance between end stops before I reset it.
(Hey, how come you have two user names; quote referes to youas ShieldOfSteel, but you're signed as MutantCav? :-?)

If I pull the fuse (#25 ; ) and leave it out for a day, will that cause the roof control to reset to factory defaults? So I should then have some movement, and only need to reset to regain the one-touch control?

... I'll get back to that one this evening, and check it again.
Fuse #25 is in good condition.
I shall double-check that teh supply to the fuse is OK, before moving forwards to seeing where the power is in the system.

Where is the control box for the sunshine roof?

Check for power at panel
Is the fuse #9 the correct one?  Based on the logo of a sunshine, it may be, but similarly that is a guessing game.
Else, as you say, I've got to strip out the roof console to check for power.  Is the control box for the roof in that panel area, so everything should be there?
Thanks.
OK, visited the technical info and found the  Omega Cabin Fusebox Info, which pointed out that I checked the fuse #9 for the automatic transmission, but not #25 for the sunroof.  :-? Always a bad start.  I'll get back to that one this evening, and check it again.

On CDX2 (2.5 Diesel CDX Estate Auto) the suinshine roof does not move at all.
Fuse #9 is OK, so should have power, but no sign of lights around selector.
Apart from a totally smoked motor, any clues?
Thanks,
Tom

EDIT: Realise fuse should be #25.  Fuse OK, still no operation.

The tractor engine is DBW.

Very few cheap readers will read anything other than engine, and some can only code read, and not show live data streams.
Would the V6 be DBW? So would it have a TPS pot?

Presumably the deciding factor for the functionality of the reader is the software, which is always the expensive bit.  After all, the interface chip (in this case, ELM327) is standard across a range of products.  Ah, but I suppose it depends if they clock it and buffer it correctly... Never mind; the answer is Tech2, unless you get lucky.

The gearbox can tell the engine to go to reduced power, but not that much reduced power!  Far more likely the throttle sensor fubar, preventing engine revving. Gearbox also reads this signal (used as part of gearchange map), hence could be valid reason for throwing g/b fault
Thanks for that; the relative scale of protection is not something I'm used to at an automotive level.
Would the accelerator pot be the same item on the V6 as the TD?  So can I swap them around? Not sure the V6 is DBW, but also was surprised to find that the TD is DBW.

And, whilst recognising your comments elsewhere that only a Tech2 will do all the tasks required, would I get any value out of a ELM327 or similar to read the ECU data?  Sounds like a neat bit of kit, but I'm hoping that I won't be getting the use out of it.... ::)

gearbox ecu will need a reasonable code reader.

also, need to fix throttle sensor first!

Apparently the car was working OK, no reported faults, and then (following an abrupt stop) the gearbox warning came on and the engine speed no longer responded to the pedal.
Is it likley that two completely separate systems would have failed at the same time? Or more likley that (say) the gearbox fault forces a degraded engine operation?
I'm with Mark's DTM Calib, to see if the throttle position is reported correctly by the Engine ECU.  Unless you happen to know if the 'box ECU fault causes the Engine ECU to go into degraded mode by overriding the supply signals to the two position sensors (hardware solution that would override any software faults).  In which case, the Engine ECU is correct in its report, but the cause is still not the actual sensor but the excitation for the sensor.
(Happy to go fully into the technology on this; I work with electronic controllers in the avionics industry.  Just don't know the logic/ground rules for the automotive versions)

My main problem is that I don't have access to a code reader or diagnostic monitor for the ECUs, so can neither monitor the throttle position nor read the gearbox fault codes.  So I'm guessing from the outside.

Unless I can swap in components from the Petrol V6 Auto (same year) to assist diagnosis.
Oh, yes, still waiting for Haynes Manual, too, so anything special to vehicle is outside my knowledge.

the ecu on the display sources info from various areas.  in case of auto gearbox, directly from gearbox ecu
Excellent. Thanks for that. This means that only one ECU is responsible for that mesage, and I can trace down this potentially major fault. (I hope it is also the source of the Engine limitation... )
Next step is to interrogate the Gearbox ECU.  Should I be able to read the Gearbox ECU fault codes through the standard test connector under the steering wheel? And do I have to use a Tech2, or is there a different sort of "paperclip" that I can use?

11
Where do the messages shown on the central display come from?
Is there one ECU that sources all of the information?
If it is the engine ECU, do all the fault messages displayed also have a fault code from the paperclip?

I'm looking at the "Automatic Gearbox" message that I'm getting, and so wondering if the engine ECU knows about it, but may not be producing a fault code.
Thanks,
Tom

The only reset I am aware of is in Resetting One Touch Window Function.
Since I don't have operation of the roof, I cannot easily drive the roof to the ends of travel to do the reset.
However, if this reset is the right thing to do, then I can manually wind the roof to each end of the travel and execute the appropriate reset (presumably to re-teach the roof where the end-of-travel positions are).

And I suppose that the intermittent light mean that the power/earth is dodgy, and so the reset values may be lost again unless I rectify that problem first? :'(

Does sunroof move if you press and hold button after selecting position?
It is when I hold the selector that the movement ocurs.
There is no movement if the selector is not pressed.

On CDX1 (M reg petrol CDX Estate 2.5 V6) the sunshine roof responds to teh change of control seting only by a small movement to open. (ISTR it is the slide direction).
I did have it "reprogrammed" by the local Vauxhall dealer, but it soon stopped operating as it should, and went back to the current operation.

I have seen the information how to reset the one-touch, but since this is not working (travelling in either direction) even without the one-touch, I don't think this is the only missing function. I have to use the manual override to wind the roof shut again when I've played with  this.
The movement is almost as if the over-current is being set.
Or perhaps the end-of-travel is being detected.

Oh, yes, the lights for the selector dial are intermittent; I don't know when they shouldbe on, but I'd guess when teh sidelights are on.  Should they also be on when the roof is operated without sidelights?  And where does the power for the lamps come from?

Any suggestions, please?

Omega Electrical and Audio Help / Re: Inter-ECU communication
« on: 01 August 2008, 00:45:42 »
Fair enough.
In my case, I'm dealing at a 1995 Omega diesel 2.5 CDX with an auto 'box.
Isn't that a bit early for CAN bus?

And following from the plethora of other questions I've raised, I'm wondering if I can stop the engine ECU from knowing that the Gearbox ECU is declaring a fault, or if they are too tightly integrated to do something as simple as pulling a connector.
