Omega General Help / Re: Engine manament light has just come on
« on: 31 October 2008, 20:35:07 »
same problem on my old estate a few years ago , intermittent power, a new sensor  and a plumbers blow torch to warm the old one out sorted it out, I seem to remember having to solder the wiring.

no its the cruise control that has stopped working, but only since the heads been done I was wondering if it had a connector to the engine that could have been left unplugged by the garage, sorry for the confusing post.

2.2 cruise control wiring ?
had the head gasket done on a 2.2 petrol, now the cruise control is not working, is there a wire plug kicking around that may have been left un-plugged by the garage ?
Any ideas ?
WIFE NAGGING !!!!!

Most fail due to blocked breathers !!!

Omega General Help / Re: Coolant Leak
« on: 19 September 2008, 22:02:52 »
It sounds like you may have the dreaded Head gasket failure, The one that many on here are in denial of, it is a very common fault on the 2.2
first fails around 100k and then around every 30k there after unless you get a complete head skim as part of the repair.
As it increases the emissions light will come on as steam is detected in exhaust gasses.
You need someone with a water tester to diagnose because the first sign is exhaust gasses in the water, basically it draws water in to the cylinder most commonly in to pot 4 hence it is known as pot 4 failure.
I do hope you find a leak !
but it doesn't sound good.
Mine was done at 104k so I opted for a head skim and for the head to be fully part washed to clean the breathers.
It's not the end of the world, but it is a bugger !
And vauxhall deny any manufacturing fault, instead they just harp on about the wrong antifreeze, in the meantime, another bites the dust !

Is it loosing any water ?
If not un plug the can sensor when it's running, it's the wiring plug under the spark plug cover engine end, on the latch plug and see if makes any difference, if it runs worse then it's ok, if it makes no difference then its buggered they are a know problem on these and even worse if it has a cheap italian one fitted.
They can throw up several codes, as the engine fails to detect it then installs a default value to start the car (2 codes) then fails to get correlation from the (4th cod) then another for crank/ cam sensor (5th code) alignment then switches in to limp mode and finally calls for low power from the engine, all in around 5 codes is not uncommon
p1700 is the call for less power code and the usual suspect that the cam sensor has caused all the rest !
 :o
Most common problems on this engine are, the cam sensor, the crank sensor, the head gasket dreaded pot 4 failure !! and the Airflow meter.

From someone whos owned 3 omegas, take a look at the endless faults and problems on here, and buy an
AUDI !

Also, why is it misinformed crap that a poor coolant mix will erode composite material? It's common sense...

Where did I say that ?
No it's perfectly good advice dear chap !!! and exactly what happens, the gasket erodes in to pot 4 usually around 100,000 miles--ish and once re-paired its lucky to last 30,000 before it's at it again
as to identical to the 2.0, no its not it's a 2.2 capacity

You however said it was mis informed crap that
The head needs to be skimmed and pressure tested. ???
That the breathers need to be cleaned before re-assembling ??

And that once the head has been off and skimmed anyone who thinks it's as good as a new engine.. well  ;D

What a load of miss informed crap......

They fail at around 100K miles if poorly maintained.

and every 30,000 after initial repair

Just out of curiosity, have you ever owned a 2.2 petrol ?
 :D
Thought not !!

The head gasket has a well known manufacture fault which brings on the dreaded "pot 4" syndrome
the gasket breaks away between the water jacket and pot 4 of the engine and fails repeatedly.
30,000 miles between repairs is average, some are very lucky and get away with no head gasket failure, however most do not.
Water is dragged in to the engine, on down stroke and gases escape in to the water on up stroke and firing, early symptoms are the blowing of the heater matrix valve due to increased pressure as it increases the emmisions light will light as steam is detected in the exhaust
Vauxhall do not want to know and will not listen, end of story
They all fail eventually !
its a head off job, a pressure test on the head it needs skimming to get the crap off where the water is dragged through, a new gasket, timing belt and top gasket set, its also a good idea to get the head cleaned out to remove any crap from the breather ports.
It is not a job for a DIY mechanic.
expect to pay around £500 for a fix.
To diagnose use a water tester bulb that detects for exhaust gasses in the water.

It is not un common to leave the ruddy radio radio on by thinking you have switched it off but instead on when the volume is right down, that soon sees off the battery.
very easily done !

All cars sold in uk post year 2000 must be OBDii compliant by law
I have a full list of P codes however I can only post 6000 bits so can not post it up

Omega General Help / Re: cam sensor on 2.2
« on: 22 August 2008, 15:05:24 »
Un plug the cam sensor wiring, then sketch the pulley belts location over the aux pulleys, then on the small tensioner pulley, the (small one on the right) use a socket + bar and turn it, the belt loosens, as if by magic !! remove it from the pulleys.
undo the timing belt cover torx bolts and nut and remove the cover
cam sensor is at top between the cam pulleys, have a good luck which way it fits and how the bottom fork goes on the stud sketch if required then undue the torx bolt from the sensor and it lifts out through the wiring hole, with a bit of a wiggle, drop the new one down the same hole ensuring its the right way and put the bolt back in, fit the timing belt cover, then lay the aux belt out over most pulleys and get someone strong and trust worthy to swing on the socket and bar to swing the "tensioner pulley" as you quickly thread the belt around pulleys via your sketch.
Once done, turn the ignition on and off 25 times to clear the ecu and start the car !
Top tip, buy the part from Vauxhall, the cheap italian ones suck !!!
Time, about 1 hour for your first one, 20 mins there after.
Difficulty level : beginner 2/10

Most oil leaks are a result of blocked breathers which cause the gasket to fail, so when the lids off, clean them all out and check the pipes coming off the lid, it is not unknown for them to be filled and blocked with black spongy sludge !
