Omega General Help / Re: Head gasket change 2L, costs ?
« on: 27 November 2010, 15:54:53 »
Oil seems to be sprayed off the belt at the front all over the filter and around that area ( it is not the filter as that has been changed twice since I have had it)

No mayo.

Right ok, I am not being clear, i haven;t ever had any mayo in the oil. I was trying to explain my very basic understanding of a head gasket ( I make sofas for a living so this is all a bit alien ) I had read that the headgasket was a common failure on the 2.0litre model, read it here as well.

I bought the car and it had a constant oil leak, nothing I couldn't handle, topped it up once a month or so with a litre.

Then after a trip to the south of france the coolant level dropped enough for the light to come on, I topped it up and not a problem for another 8 months, then 1 month before I went traveling the coolant low level light came on again, top it up, the light came on again within 100 miles.

I stuck in K block ( rad weld type stuff ), carried on, the temp would be fine but it would go up then down, then up and down, the warning light would come on for low coolant when the temp went down and off and when the temp went up, I would top it back up carry on.

I went traveling and now 6 months later would like it fixed, was told when I got it serviced that the head gasket had gone ( 6 months previous to it losing water )

Any of you knowledgeable gentlemen know better? Don't want to waste money

Cheers
ben

I thought the head gasket seal he top and bottom block, whihc the pistons go up and down in, whihc has oil runing trhough it and "pipework" for use of a better word of water running round cooling the block.

I thought the reason you get "mayo" in the oil is when the gasket starts to break down and they mix. My car has had a steady leak of oil since I got it, and I presume the gasket has gone even more now and the water is now leaking out of a section of gasket that has broken down.

No ? am I completely off base here ?

The gasket has leaked oil for as long as I have had it, but it now pisses water so needs changing.

I have a guy who has said it will be £330 in parts for new water pump, cambelt etc, I have found for £40 a head gasket set, he says it will need the extra bit to do the change as the cambelt needs to come off and might need the rad doing as well etc etc.

I have also seen a guy in the midlands who will do the job for £290 ( I am in london so can't take it there ).

Thought I would ask you guys what should I be roughly paying and what does it involve, parts etc and if there is anyone who wants to earn cash ( proper money not expecting mates rates ) to do it near Harrow, then get in contact or recommend someone/ a business local.

Regards
Ben

Omega General Help / Auto gearbox fluid, how, where pics ?
« on: 21 May 2009, 18:27:40 »
I would like to top up the gear box fluid ( change it completly ideally but I have seen what a faff that is ) just to ease my mind.

Thing is I don;t know where to start, I guess a garage will charge a health margin over the £30 for the fluid so would like to just do the best I can.

Can anyone help me with a picture of the underneath and where to look. Some people have said there is a drain plug ? if so is there a place where you can drain the fluid and then anther place you can top it up from  ( I realise without dropping both the sumps I won;t get it all changed.)

If there is a drain plug, how much would drain off for it with out dropping the sumps ?

10%, 20%. I am thinking if I can get rid of as much of the old stuff as possible then top up it better than just topping it up.

sounds like the arm has moved on the motor, it s secured by a 13(?) mill nut and its come loose, remove scuttle so you can see the motor, undo the nut so its nice and loose, lever the arm off the splined motor shaft, you should now be able to reset the position of the wipers, re tighten the nut on the motor shaft, test, refit scuttle.

Thank you very much, you have helped with other problems I have had.

Very much appreciated.

I had a load of snow on the window on monday and scraped most of it off, turned on the wipers to get the rest, the wiper motor made a noise but didn't move much then sweeped the snow off.

Now the blades stop at a 40 degree angle ( a third of the way up on the sweep ) when it finishes it cycle. It will sweep the whole of the window but won;t stay down at the bottom.

I am guessing it has just pushed its sprocket/sleeve to a different finish position. any idea how to adjust it back please

Cheers

..online ?

I am still trying to fix my blowing fuse, figure that the best bet is to just cut the rear heated window and heated seats completely ( trieed at the rear window and still popping ) at the fuse box so to completely rule out any shorting anywhere down the wires.

12
The climate control has always been fine, then one day flicked off as we were driving, pressed the buttons and it came back on, did this for a few hours then died. Changed the fuse ( no.14 30amp ) for a 25amp as it was all I had, went to the south of france just fine, worked for a good few months.

Went to start the car and no panel display for climate ( everything else ok ) and no control of vents air temp etc. Changed the fuse and it popped straight away, changed it again and it was fine, drove back from dorset no problems.

Get to fulham stop at traffic lights and it goes off, press buttons nothing, when moving it came back on, stopped, went off etc, til it wouldn't come on.

Change fuse and started it cold this morning, popped, let the car warm up, changed it and it was fine, til I stopped again, went off.

Got to work and it works when moving if I switch it back on, but as soon as I stop it goes blank and will eventually pop the fuse.

Any ideas ? I thought about just sticking in a breaker fuse ( trying to find one at the moment, any ideas ? ) rather than just replacing the fuses.

Also this all seams to happen when it is very cold outside ?

The things I would do are

1) Check ALL fuses and make sure they are fuly inserted
2) Pop the radio out and check for trapped wires.

Then go on a standard diag from there!

Thankyou, any online guides to popping the radio out on a 2000 reg omega ? Probably have a go at that myself.

by 0V means earth.

Does the compressor kick in?

Press the Off button, when the car is running on idle, press auto, you should hear a click, and revs will raise slightly.

No nothing at all, the display is dark, nothing happens, no air comes out no nothing, like it has been switch off at the mains.

Might be difficult to "turn off" if display is dead...?
Tamps, as you say, re fuse, your might expect it to just blow. But its not totaly unusual for a fuse to be hanging out of its locattor. While you check in the box(cupboard) under stearing wheel you may as well check all the others, there should be a pair  of tweaser type things on the let to help get them out.It does sound like a bad connection has finally failed. If not fuse maybe earth, but god knows where that is. If neither of those then a bad connection behind centre console of dash maybe?
Oh, disconnect the battery if you play around with it. Reset windows, sun roof and radio code may be needed after. There are guides in maintenance re dash and centre console removal. You may need security keys to plug in to holes behind 4 grub screws
on radio facia if you need to get in behind radio. Hth somehow...

Right I have just had a look at the fuses ( couldn't find the tweezers ), I found which fuse was the air conditioning system ( it was 30 ) so bunged in the spare 40 fuse I have, started the car, nothing still.

Big hairy 'dangle berries'

Right what next ? to be honest I am scare shitless of electonics so might have to had this over to a mechanic, unless there is someone here near Hillingdon/Surrey that wants some money for having a go ?

I will happily bring the car to you. If not, what do I do next.

Cheers

No one here fancy earning a few quid ?

If not my friend is a mechanic, but what should I tell him to do to give him a  headstart ?
