Head gasket change 2L, costs ?
« on: 26 November 2010, 12:08:42 »

The gasket has leaked oil for as long as I have had it, but it now pisses water so needs changing.

I have a guy who has said it will be £330 in parts for new water pump, cambelt etc, I have found for £40 a head gasket set, he says it will need the extra bit to do the change as the cambelt needs to come off and might need the rad doing as well etc etc.

I have also seen a guy in the midlands who will do the job for £290 ( I am in london so can't take it there ).

Thought I would ask you guys what should I be roughly paying and what does it involve, parts etc and if there is anyone who wants to earn cash ( proper money not expecting mates rates ) to do it near Harrow, then get in contact or recommend someone/ a business local.

Regards
Ben

Hold up, what gasket leaks oil then water ?

Are we talking leaking cam covers and hbv?

Why do you think the head gasket has gone?

If it is the head gasket thats gone then you'll need at the very least:

Head Set
Head Bolts
Timing Belt Kit
Water Pump
Antifreeze
Oil Filter
Oil

Price wise you can pick up some really cheap parts but you do get what you pay for so shop around for the best you can afford

Also you may want to budget for having the head check for flatness

I thought the head gasket seal he top and bottom block, whihc the pistons go up and down in, whihc has oil runing trhough it and "pipework" for use of a better word of water running round cooling the block.

I thought the reason you get "mayo" in the oil is when the gasket starts to break down and they mix. My car has had a steady leak of oil since I got it, and I presume the gasket has gone even more now and the water is now leaking out of a section of gasket that has broken down.

No ? am I completely off base here ?

Where are you seeing the mayo? If it's in the sump, visible on the dip stick, with bubbling in the water tank, then yes hg failed.

If all you have is mayo on the filler neck, then that is Normal for short runs, not hg failed.

Need more accurate info perhaps?  We do get the odd HG failure on here, but I guarantee we gat several times more incorrectly diagnosed, very rare for HG to fail.

Right ok, I am not being clear, i haven;t ever had any mayo in the oil. I was trying to explain my very basic understanding of a head gasket ( I make sofas for a living so this is all a bit alien ) I had read that the headgasket was a common failure on the 2.0litre model, read it here as well.

I bought the car and it had a constant oil leak, nothing I couldn't handle, topped it up once a month or so with a litre.

Then after a trip to the south of france the coolant level dropped enough for the light to come on, I topped it up and not a problem for another 8 months, then 1 month before I went traveling the coolant low level light came on again, top it up, the light came on again within 100 miles.

I stuck in K block ( rad weld type stuff ), carried on, the temp would be fine but it would go up then down, then up and down, the warning light would come on for low coolant when the temp went down and off and when the temp went up, I would top it back up carry on.

I went traveling and now 6 months later would like it fixed, was told when I got it serviced that the head gasket had gone ( 6 months previous to it losing water )

Any of you knowledgeable gentlemen know better? Don't want to waste money

Cheers
ben

Cam cover gaskets fail regularly. External oil leak is almost always down to these.

Why will the rad need doing? How many miles until the cam belt is actually due?

pm darth loo knee, Daz a moderator here, he may travel down if it has failed.?

I'd want to be sure it's failed first before spending a penny. It might have failed, fair enough, but as said, these cars get misdiagnosed far far more often.

Whoops cross posted. 2litre more likely to fail.

Where are you seeing the oil leak?

Where are you seeing the mayo?

Oil seems to be sprayed off the belt at the front all over the filter and around that area ( it is not the filter as that has been changed twice since I have had it)

No mayo.

Seems this car needs a look over by someone in the know before you spend too much money on it....
PM Loo-knee(Daz), because he does come down towards London sometimes.
I would just say though be guided by those on the site, they often know more than some garages!
