Omega General Help / Hydraulic lock on a v6. Is it dead?
« on: 15 December 2008, 22:39:07 »
I drove through a 'puddle' yesterday that ended up being a bit deeper than I had at first thought.
Just as I got through the engine died.
I managed to get the water out of the big inlet tube  - it was literally brimful and took out the plugs and turned it over and lots of water pumped out.
It then started but it wasn't firing on all cylinders.
I drove home (about 50 miles) and changed the plugs and oil.

The right hand side bank doesn't work at all though.  I checked and theres a spark on all the plugs and they all have compression (between 13 and 14Bar) and I can see little puffs of petrol when I turn it over.  The plugs on that side though are black with oil and even a quick turn over seems to dirty them.

What could have happened?

I think my next task is to get the top off and look to see what I can but I'm no expert and I'd really appreciate any advice on possible causes and checks I could make to see exactly whats wrong.

Thanks a lot  :)

Omega General Help / Re: Coolant Leak, Passenger side of engine

I've just had the same problem, but without the steam.
For me it was the connection of the thermosts housing with the metal pipe that stick out towards the power steering pump, and connects the rubber hose to the rad.

Bummer of a job, but Mark TDM said get the plenum off and access is possible.
Did it, was possible (hurray), and am waiting for the parts from VX.

Fantastic

I have a printed copy of the excellent breather cleaning guide ;) so shoudn't be a prob, and will tighten the clamp.

Thanks a lot mate, suddenly the sun is shining here. :y

Ok I've checked the rubber hose and its ok, but the metal pipe it goes onto is wobbly ?

Its the big one in the middle of the pic.

I'm terrified to get the timing belt and rear cover off as I haven't a cam locking tool.

What should I do?

TBH I am not 100% sure.

I had a look with the inspection mirror and it looked ok, but i wanted to keep it on and filled with fluid, to see the leak actually leaking.

I will now remove that pipe and check it out.

Thanks a lot Mark.

I 've suddenly developed a leak but can't see where it might be comming from..

It's the 3.0 V6, and the leak is on the right (as you look from the front) somewhere just above the aircon compressor, and is dribbling down over it.

There is a big watrer hose there but it is not that (would be too easy).

Any ideas what it might be, because I have to remove 1/2 the engine bits just to see where it's comming from..
I've got the ram air and aux belt off and it's not the water pump.

Thanks a lot.

Omega General Help / Re: ICV/Throttle Body cleaning
« on: 30 May 2007, 10:03:28 »
I have the same thing!

My 3.0 engine was cutting out at idle sometimes, so yesterday I removed the plenum and throttle housing and cleaned everything.
When I put it all back it was fine but idling at a little too high revs.

Before it would idle at about 500rpm but now it's about 800rpm when in neutral and 600rpm when in drive with the brakes on.

Could this be the ICV?  or maybe there is some air getting in somewhere?  When I squeeze shut the hose that goes from the intake pipes to the ICV the idle speed slows down to a more normal speed..

Also it cut out again today when (whilst parked) I held the revs at 2500 for a few secs and then took my foot off the pedal.

Any suggestions?

I have towed a horsebox compleate with two horses without any problem with my 2.5 Omega quite a few times

Don't horses ever get car sick?  If you made me stand in a swaying box where I couln't see where I was going I'd chuck up all over the place! :o

More difficult to easily find somewhere that will fill you car with heating gas  :-?

My mates Dad has a filler so he can use the orange propane tanks to fill.  Souldn't be hard to make/get.

Also out of interest, when I lived in Mexico, I've seen lot of mopeds with the camping Gaz bottles bungeed on the back seat, as well as some cars which strapped the propane tanks on the roof - 3 tanks could get you over 1000 miles without taking up any boot space!  A good idea untill you crash.

You can do it with some modfified pliers.  I strugled for ages before aralditing a couple of bits of plastic on the end of some needle nose pliers.  Get the lines and filter from the clips and rotate the ruber lines to free them before using you modified pliers.  It was such a PITA that I have resolved to get the right tool for it.
I have seen this suggested.

To depressurise the system first remove fuse number 18 when the cars idling..

After a little wait I eventually got my chip weheee

Right after I put it in I went round the corner to the local by-pass and was surprised at how much more torque there seems to be.  I was going to overtake so put it in sports moder and floored it and shot off so quickly I nearly buried it in the guy in front.. :P

Generally though there is a noticable increase in torque between 2-3000rpm which means it holds a higher gear a bit longer.  Also on steep hills you can really feel it, and when its about 3500rpm the pull is really good.

The engine does seem a bit rougher though with a definite lumpy idle (compared to before), and when you floor it it sort of roars and screams (albeit a bit of a muffled) - a decent exhaust would sound awesum.

It's difficult to tell, especially on an auto, but there feels like it's added about 5-10% to the torque overall, and the torque curve feels as flat as before which I like.  Would love to get it on a dyno.

I've only done about 200 miles so far and am hoping it will improve the mpg a bit, but I won't know for sure for another few weeks but I'll let y'all know.

I though it was based on torque (i.e. real power!) and not bhp.....as in an AR35 is good for 350Nm.....

Hmm..

Well if HP = (Torque*RPM)/5252 then the AR35 should handle an engine that produces 258hp at 5252RPM and therefore about 320hp at 6500rpm...

hp is a bit less than bhp though.

Its funny reading a similar thread on the "other" place, they all vote Vectra.

I would have the Mondeo personally, looks better & less in your face. Slower to 60 but handles so much better and more fun to drive.

Totally agree.  I had a new Vectra Estate for a couple of weeks and hated it.  Even with a 1.8 it understreers quite dramatically.  [smiley=shocked.gif]
