Omega General Help / Re: tuning a V6

Shoot me down in flames if I'm wrong, but isn't the Saab based on a Vectra floorpan and mechanicals?

Omega General Help / Re: Droplinks and Steering idler

Job done, 45minutes for both droplings steering idlers and some rustproofing work. I would suggest to anyone willing to do this job to paint the new parts because they come as bare metal and they will rust very quickly. The tramlining is now gone and the steering feels much sharper.

That last bit about tramlining. Did it lurch sideways out of tramlines and sort of bump steer over uneven country roads? Thats what mine does and I've been wondering why.

Omega General Help / Re: Omega Tyre Choice (not too expensive)
« on: 14 June 2008, 20:51:49 »
As I have posted before, Wanli tyres have minimal wet grip and are to be avoided like the plague.

Falken have recently upgraded from ZE 512 to ZE 912 and Event Tyres fitted the new version for the same price as the old ones.
I started off with 512s on the front and 912s on the rear and the car understeered more than I liked in the wet, so I swapped the wheels front to rear and now it oversteers but not as badly as with Wanlis.
So I would go for 912s if you want to use Falkens.

Omega General Help / Air con. troubles
« on: 13 June 2008, 19:14:29 »
The garage tells me that the reason the aircon has failed is a leaking compressor seal and the condenser is on its last legs. He quoted me about £700 total using new parts.
Any ideas how to fix it cheaper?

Omega General Help / 2.2 diesel questions
« on: 07 June 2008, 17:20:29 »
Hi all,
I've been looking at an '02  2.2 dti and now I've got some questions before parting with my money.

1.  Is it easy to fit cruise control? how much?

2.  On the passenger's side of the engine there is a large rubber tube and just above it, there is a semi-circular lump on the plastic cover that goes along the top corner of the cam box.

It looks like there is a small oil leak from the plastic cover that is dripping onto the rubber tube. Is this serious?

Otherwise the car looks fine.

TIA

Eddie.

Omega General Help / Re: Tar like substance in the boot
« on: 09 March 2008, 21:02:33 »
This could be a long job. Get cellulose thinners first, apply liberally with a rag to try soaking up the oil/diesel, then leave the boot open in the sunshine for as long as possible to dry and ventilate the smell.

If that don't work, remove the sound deadening with a decorator's scraper and a heat gun. Clean off residues with the thinners and paint over the inevitable scratches with a heavy duty primer like that Hammerite pink stuff.
Then fit new sound deadening. It is self adhesive but you will need a heat gun to soften it so that it moulds to the contours of the boot floor.

PS.  Hellfrauds no longer stock cellulose thinners.

PPS. Those sound deadening pads are not cheap.

Omega General Help / Exterior Temperature
« on: 23 July 2006, 21:02:53 »
The display reads- F   deg. C or something like that. The rest of the display works OK. so I guess it's the sender at fault. Question is, where is the sender?
Thanks,

Eddie.

Omega General Help / Re: Fan for the exhaust?
« on: 23 November 2007, 21:10:42 »
This air pump buisiness is driven by Euro 2 & 3 legislation.

Euro 2 (1996 - 2000) ignores emisions during the first 30 seconds after starting. So some manufacturers fitted air injection pumps and ran the fueling extra rich imediately after start up,effectively lighting a bonfire in the cat. It warms the cat. up nice and quick but you get about 7 mpg for the first 45 seconds or so.

When Euro 3 came in (2000) the 30 second rule was dropped, then we had drive by wire and lambda sensors before and after the cat. This allowed the ECU to control emissions much more accurately.

Hope this does not give you all "anoraknophobia" ;)

Omega General Help / Re: Reverse light switch
« on: 05 November 2007, 22:53:56 »
I don't know if you can do much with the switch. I unscrewed mine and tested it with a meter,
pushing the plunger in and out, it seemed to work so I re-fitted it and it worked fine for a few months. Trouble is, it's a sealed unit so you can't clean the contacts.
Sorry to sound so pessimistic,
Eddie.

With a manual box, the only electric wires that go to the box are for the revesing light switch.
IIRC it is on the nearside just high enough up the box to be a pain to get at.
This is assuming that the 2.5 diesel has the same box as the 2.5 petrol.

Omega General Help / Sourcing Wishbones
« on: 28 October 2007, 20:29:43 »
I seem to remember reading that pattern wishbones are not worth buying as the bush rubbers give up the ghost after a few months. With that in mind, are Autovaux wishbones genuine GM parts?

TIA,

Eddie.

Omega General Help / Re: Estate windscreen.
« on: 17 October 2007, 20:55:16 »
I've had a couple of windscreens replaced by a guy called Pete who was based just south of Bedford.

(Sorry it was some years ago and the details are a bit hazy now.)

Anyway, he carefully made good any paint damage before fitting the new 'screen and took about twice as long over the job as the usual mobile guys.
Isn't it a shame they aren't all like Pete?

Please can someone confirm - are "V" rated tyres legally OK to be used on the 2000 W 2.5V6?
Hi James, I am almost certain that the Omega handbook states V rated tyres as standard, can check in the morning for you if you want.

The handbook for my '99 2.5 V6 states 'V' rated tyres.

Omega General Help / Re: EML slow to go out

Now I've got the time AND it's daylight, I've checked cranking voltage. It's between 10.7 and 10.9 Volts. Thats OK isn't it?
