Thank you. I was going to start look at Idle Control sensors ect. I assumed the temperature would be a faulty thermostat and never even thought they would be connected.

Hi all,
My sister has a 98 Megane 1.6. Recently it has been cutting out all the time, even when changing gear and has been often idling at around 4000rpm. Any ideas or common faults on these things??
The only other thing to note is the engine temp takes forever to get up to normal, infact quite often it doesn't. I'm not sure that is relevent and I'll be checking the thermostat for that one, but you people might know something I don't
I haven't worked on a Renault since I had a Renault 19 about 8yrs ago, so I'm a little unfamiliar with its logistics!
Any comments grateful.

I agree with the majority... It's likely to be standard servicing, tyres, plugs, air filter, oil & breathers. Even if none of these look drastically bad, improving them all together should make a difference of some sorts.
Other things to check are the timing/mixture. Engine temperature is a good point, a warm engine is an efficient engine as my ol' man used to say
If they throw up nothing then you'll have to do a bit more digging... brakes binding and other stranger things.
Only other thing I would add is bear in mind you can loose about 6mpg in the cold weather! And with a V6 I would 25mpg was a very acceptable figure. My 2.5 Auto used to dip to 18mpg unless I was meticulously careful

It doesn't sound like a head gasket to me...
However I'm no expert. Is there any mayo on the dipstick or filler cap? Is the coolant a rusty colour? Lastly what is the engine temperature like? And is it loosing any water??
No disrespect to the RAC man but I wouldn't say squeezing a radiator hose was any way to confirm HG failure.
To be sure you could compression test each cylinder - very quick, easy and conclusive test

Just took the car shopping to Asda and the indicators have packed up! Not a normal fault, they're totally dead, nothing at all. The hazards still work fine. I've tried taking the flasher unit out under the steering wheel and that stopped the hazards. Is there another one for the indicators or do they both use the same? Everything else on the stalk works (cruise control, main beam etc). Any ideas? I aint good with electrics!

Exactly as above - with the engine running take the voltage across the battery (doesn't really matter which way round, you'll just get a negative reading).
Perfect reading would be about 14v and as you rev it should go up a bit. If you have 7v you got real problems and I would expect the ignition light to be on and the engine to stop pretty soon.
The one advantage to the charging system is its normally the fan belt (sorry aux belt these days), the battery or the alternator and all are pretty easy to change.

I had the exact same thing on my Omega when I bought it. I'm not promising but I changed the MAF - took me two mins, cost £15 from a generous member and runs like a new car!

A bit strange I know but if anyone can sort my heating and vac system its worth £20 and all the tea you can drink! I'm working ALL the time at the mo and my other half and little girl are giving me ear ache because it's so cold
To summerise - the vac pipe has been disconnected from the HBV, the heater matrix pipes seem to be cold (i think, not certain) and the air is pretty much cold and only at the windscreen. I don't have access to a hose pipe to try flushing the system and I'm not really sure I could do it in the dark anyway The coolant has been changed though.

My heater is really confusing me now! I've taken the vacuum pipe off the HBV valve and at first it made no difference, still freezing cold, then when I turned the engine off next I got a coolant level warning. I put a little in even though it was fine.....now I have luke warm air but if I increase the fan speed it seems to cool the air down.
Also the direction control makes no difference - its windscreen only and the heater matrix pipes seem to be cold, top and bottom (if I've checked the right ones!). The only other thing is I've tried running with the expansion cap off to bleed an air lock.
Sorry to be so long, but lots of information to get in!
