Omega General Help / Re: NSF electric window problem
« on: 12 February 2008, 23:08:04 »
Might be able to. Just depends if they have one (an Omega)..

But can probably get the switch out and try it on a testmeter..... but (speaking as a retired electronics engineer) it doesn't seem to be acting how a duff switch would do....??

Cheers
Roger

You may be on to something there in that the battery failed a week or so back and hence a new one fitted. So would have been unpowered for several minutes.

BUT I have just tried your suggestion and it hasn't made any difference. Also have to say the OSF window is behaving normally...

Omega General Help / NSF electric window problem
« on: 12 February 2008, 20:20:47 »
My 1995 2.5TD auto has just recently developed a problem with the NSF window control. It certainly was alright but now it won't stop halfway or almost anywhere except full up or full down although it is actually still ok for the bottom 2". I am not sure if there is some sensor switch on the motor/winder mechanism or is it due to a control relay?

If it is a control relay then whereabouts can I find it?

Omega General Help / Re: 2.5TD little acceleration
« on: 17 November 2007, 14:27:19 »
In that case I am thankful that I don't have any symptoms in this area BUT the question still stands.......

Is it necessary to routinely change the gearbox oil & filter? And if so how often?
Once a year? or every 20,000m or what????

Cheers
Roger

Thanks for the 'how to' on the auto gearbox which is certainly useful...

But my question really was: how often do I need to do this? and/or what problem symptoms suggest that it ought to be done?

Guys
Particularly 'The Boy' and the PDF you posted. I can now see that the replacement fuel filter they sold me at the shop is the wrong one, probably for a petrol one. Looking in the PDF suggests that it is pretty similar to an oil filter and is removed/replaced the same way. With the sun so low in the sky (as it is at the moment) it can make looking in the engine compartment difficult but the illustrations in the PDF are super so I will now have a clear idea of what I am trying to do.

Not that I have a problem in that area but I am a little concerned about routine maintainence and an 'oil & filter change for the auto gearbox' as mentioned by IrmscherKris. I haven't needed to do this routinely on all the previous auto gearbox cars (SAAB's) that I have had. So what needs to be done on the Omega TD auto?

Guys
Thanks for your help. I shall keep the printout for another day!
Now the problem has been pinpointed it is SO obvious that I could kick myself. I guess any one of you might have been right but as it happens IrmscherKris was especially right about checking filters. After looking round to make sure nothing obvious was falling off I started with the air filter. It was black. They usually are of course but this one seemed VERY black. The engine must have thought so to as it had partly sucked the paper into a dome shape and out of the rubber edging. With a new filter fitted and on a trial run I was up to 70 from cold in the space of 1/2 mile!!! The initial black cloud vanished (presumably as the new super air flow cleaned the system!!) and it now accelerates faster than it ever has...

I bought a new fuel filter but it is not fitted yet as it is not obvious how. I have the problem that I have the Haynes Omega manual but this only covers the petrol versions so I have to fumble & guess on the diesel bits..

Update.
What I said before does not now appear to be quite right. This seems to be a new event.....
The position now is that, today at any event, it is much worse. It starts and ticks over ok and I can pootle up our local lane to the main road without trouble. As I drive off down the road the gears change ok but it is difficult to pick up speed. As it gets to about 25-30 it is not accelerating and not going fast enough to get into top gear. There are clouds of smoke behind. Within 1/2 mile I give up and drive home.... just about!!

We had to do shopping so I haven't had a chance to investigate joints/filters etc but will have a look tomorrow. Personally I would say it wasn't a gearbox problem as it changes at the speeds I expect it to.

I have had the car for about 15 months and haven't changed/checked anything except the glow plugs.

Ta for replies..

Sorry should have said. Yes it is an auto

And yep it starts reasonably well. I fitted a new set of glow plugs a few hundred miles back but the problem has always been there (and MIGHT be getting worse slowly. Not quite sure about that)
I don't think there are any special noises but then I am deaf and might not be hearing them. The Mrs says she thinks it is a noisy car but I don't think she has anything specific in mind..

My 1995 Omega 2.5TD doesn't go too bad as long as you are not in any sort of hurry. But if you give it even a modest amount of welly it drops a cog (as you might expect) revs up a bit but doesn't go any faster. In fact if you floor the accelerator if anything it goes a bit slower.

About half the accelerator pedal travel does nothing useful at all.....

But if feeling laid back on a straight(ish) road eg motorway the speed will slowly build up to at least the legal limit and beyond.

So what's the hangup? Why won't it rev a bit more??

Omega General Help / How to remove inlet manifold 2.5TD/manual
« on: 30 July 2007, 17:11:49 »
Hi
Motor half in bits. Got the inlet manifold undone. Removed vent strip & windscreen wipers but there is not enough room to pull back the inlet manifold to get over fixings :(

It looks like there is an add-in bit round the heating system air filter but it also seems to be well and truly stuck. Is this meant to be removable? If so how?

Wouldn't need to ask some of these questions if I could get a workshop manual for the 2.5 TD... Anyone know where??
Roger

And thanks to Mark admin I now have a set of glow-plugs to fit when I can get there..

I have a 2.5TD 1995. In the past I have always bought a Haynes workshop manual for my cars.

This time I have a problem in that the Haynes manual doesn't cover the diesel models...

So first question is what do the rest of you do? Can one obtain manuals from elsewhere? And if so at what cost?

The 2nd question is that I am about to change my glow plugs for which I need to remove the inlet manifold. So bearing in mind I don't have a manual... Can anyone advise on the torque settings for fitting the glow plugs and re-fitting the inlet manifold?
Cheers

Omega General Help / Re: Omega 2.5TD starting problems

I have had an AA man look at the car and he is sure it is a glow plug problem. I did try to PM you but got no reply.
The question is what do you want for the glow plugs? I assume these are new??

Omega General Help / Re: Omega 2.5TD starting problems
« on: 04 July 2007, 02:47:43 »
In between showers I have had a chance to have a look....
There are some pipes that daisy chain from injector to injector and finally to somewhere..... These are all braid covered so it is difficult to see the state of the pipe material itself but I would have said they were ok. I gave some a tug to see if they were loose but seem ok.

So I had a look round the pump. After locating it in the boot & disconnecting the pipes and electrical connector I tried to get it out. I have the Haynes book on the Omega but of course it doesn't cover the diesel engine.... Anyway sort of unclipped it as the book suggests but the middle bit with the pump would only come up about 1/2" & no amount of jiggling would persuade it to come any further.

Had to stop there as was gone 9pm & starting to get dark....
Have to say I can't quite see the logic in it why would the fuel filter being blocked a bit affect startup when little fuel is needed versus full speed??
Cheers Roger

Omega General Help / Omega 2.5TD starting problems
« on: 02 July 2007, 13:33:12 »
I have had an Omega 2.5TD for about a year. This is the first diesel I have owned although very experienced with petrol engines. The problem is that over about the last few months and very slowly it has become more difficult to start. After waiting for the glow plug indicator to go out and starting to crank it is like one cylinder will fire but not the others. It is usually better to keep cranking than trying to wait for the glow plugs again. Eventually, and after lots of smoke from the exhaust, it is like another cylinder catches and then it starts.
After starting it runs normally and a restart when warm is ok.
Is this a glow plug problem in some way? Or something else?
Cheers
Roger
