Omega General Help / What to look out for on an Omega test drive
« on: 04 September 2010, 10:29:48 »
Hi again,

I've tried the search but not had much luck, it won't work on searching all posts, perhaps because I'm on mobile bb but thats another issue.

Anyway, I'm looking for a few pointers on what to look out for when test driving and viewing an Omega.

Service history and cambelt, idler and tensioner changes at 40, 80 and 120k I've already heard about.

I'm guessing being a heavy car, that they are hard on suspension? I remember the Carlton was always knocking out ARB bushes.
I've seen a few posts here on front wishbones, is there anything to look out?

Handbrake? I'm guessing this will be like the Carlton's drum under disc arrangement, but do they suffer the same rusting backplate issue?

Any other general issues, noises etc?

Cheers.

Omega General Help / Re: Opinions on the 2.2 diesel and petrol

Thanks, I definitely think I'm looking for a 2.2DTi manual with good history now but not concerned too much with mileage (within reason).

I've got another car project on the go that will be my hobby car, so speed on this isn't a priority. I'm off to a 13 mile toll road in a friend's car soon so I can have some RWD fun in that instead.

Thanks for all the responses.

Thanks for the replies, certainly given me some things to think on.

The Carlton we had was a 2.0i CD saloon and was heavy on fuel around town but I could get 40mpg out of it on a run and the same with my parents' 2.2i Vectra. I know the Omega is a fair bit heavier though.

Brochure performance figures put the 2.2i manual as being not far behind the 2.6 auto acceleration wise, I guess the 2.6 is alot more relaxed making prgress though.

Most of my running is going to be open road and outer urban, there won't be much busy city centre stuff. Although I need it for work use, mostly I cycle the 2 miles to work or take the bus.

I might still get some insurance quotes on the 3.2, never know, as a more mature car it might be cheaper than the Impreza despite being a group higher. Everything comes down to money in the end :(

Hi,
While I'd love a 3.2, I think that at group 18 insurance and including it with business mileage, it may get a bit costly. Even though I'm not paying that much currently for my group 17 car, I do want something thats a little easier on insurance.
Cheers, B.

Omega General Help / Opinions on the 2.2 diesel and petrol

Hi,

I'm looking to join the world of Omega ownership. What I haven't done is decided which engine. It will need to be an estate and I prefer manual gears.

The first thing I'd like to know is people's opinions on the 2.2 diesel powerplant. I know it is fairly slow in the big car, but is it generally reliable or does it have any reputation for failing?

My parents used to have a 2.2i petrol vectra and I didn't think it was a bad engine, not too bad on consumption or restricted in power and they never had any problems with it.

I know neither will be breaking any speed records and I'm not expecting that of them. I suppose I'd lean towards a petrol unless there is going to be a massive difference in running costs over say 3 years and 40k miles.

What do people think?

Thanks,
Barry.

Hi,

Thought I'd say Hi before posting in the general help.

I'm currently looking to part-ex my car as its nearing the MOT and a few things need done.

Being 6'8" I'm looking for something my legs fit in. I've been in Omegas before and I know they are comfy and spacious for the driver. My Mum and Dad had a Carlton which I used to get to drive and that was a comfy car but also really nice to drive and crucially I could get both my knees to a normal driving position, hence the Omega seems a logical choice.

So Hi to all, seems a nice forum.

General Car Chat / Re: Rover 200 Head Gasket
« on: 21 June 2011, 18:54:51 »
There are a few other things to check for. indentations in the head or warping of the head face if it has overheated.

Also check for possible causes and repair as required. A 98 214 would have been supplied with a steel radiator which will have corroded by now and gunked up the cooling system.
Even if the rad has been replaced, the gunk may still be there and usually blocks the little ball bearing valve on the inlet manifold. Make sure this is clear before re-assembly. Also use a new inlet manifold gasket.

Most re-failures of head gaskets on K-series are because of garages not repairing the initial cause when they replace the gasket.
