Just a quick update. This was defo the replacement crank sensor at fault. Got a genuine part, problem solved.

Might be worth checking at the crank sensor itself in addition to at the ECU just in case it's the section of wiring between ECU connector and engine loom plug for crank sensor but more than likely the sensor itself IMHO.

Kevin

Thanks. Fortunately i had the foresight to do that anyway, wanted to be certain there was no other possibility.

Spent another day playing around with this. Have been following the TIS fault guide forwards backwards and side ways, to my mind everything points back to the new crank sensor.
Points to note..
  • The measured resistance across terminals 1 & 2 of the crank sensor when the fault is not present is around 900 - 1000 ohms
  • The measured resistance across terminals 1 & 2 of the crank sensor when the fault is present is Infinity

This cycle continuously repeats each time the engine is run long enough for the fault to reappear (infinate resistance), and allowed to stand (900-1000 ohms). The transition time between the two extremes of measurement is almost instantaneous, by that i mean there does'nt seem to be a gradual roll off of resistance , during the 5 min or so the sensor takes to switch back into working mode it will go from infinate back to the working range in a snap.

I think it's fair to say that the sensor resistance is going open circuit as temperature increases.

Anyone have anything to add before i dispose of some more cash ?

Hmmm There was no shielding present around the cable, have owned the car for 3 years so either it never was there, or it was removed when i had an injector pump issue looked into about 2 months ago.

Thanks for your help so far admin.

On the plastic fixing of the crankshaft sensor, the retaining screw passes through a metal sleeve. Can you tell me, is the screw itself acting as a grounding point via the engine for the sensor once screwed back into place ?

The area around the screw hole on the engine was corroded, which i cleaned up as best i could(access was'nt easy). However i did notice the inside of the screw hole was rusted, but i have nothing to get inside of it.

Any ideas. ?

Thanks. Its the crankshaft sensor (Not Cam) with the problem.

Can you tell me what definatly constitues a grounding point on the ECU harness connector, Managed to get hold of a TIS fault finding guide for this fault but i'm not entirely sure if i trust what i see...but then again the multimeter i'm using is a 5 quid special  :P

I wanted the relay layout for future reference purposes, The ones listed in the FAQ's section do not included the Y22dth and i'm not sure if any listed would correspond to mine.

As for the ECU pinout,
I'm trying to track down a Crankshaft sensor fault P0725 & P1335.(this has been posted in the general section)

I replaced the sensor with a non genuine part and the fault has persisted. I've tracked down ecu harness pin 98 (crankshaft sensor terminal 2) and pin 90 (crankshaft terminal 1) and pin 101 i believe is ground but need this confirming.

Also, what value would constitute a short circuit value if testing from the ecu harness connector pins (90 & 98) to the corresponding connector pins connector on the crankshaft sensor harness socket ?

(I mistakenly put camshaft, modified to read correctly -crankshaft)

I need a pinout for the ECU harness connector. , and if anyone can provide a layout with description of the surrounding relays i would be very greatful

Thanks

Omega General Help / Engine bounce

On cold start the engine tends to bounce around quite enthusiastically, to the point where i seem to have developed a blowing problem with the exhaust further up towards either the flexible coupling or the manifold.

My question is, what is causing the engine to leap around in the first place, ? , it's bee suggested to me either the engine mounts or a fault on the fuel line !

Any help appreciated, thanks.

Omega General Help / Re: High fuel consumption.

The dashboard readout was correct in terms of fuel. I changed fuel and air filter and renewed the oil. I'm now getting around the 40 MPG mark which is a considerable improvement  :)

.... so i should be getting somewhere around the 50 mark.  ....
Where does this figure come from? My 1.7TD Astra only does 45-ish mpg

............ last changed 10 months ago (6000 miles).......
You should be changing it more frequently than this. They suggest 3/4000 miles here although my Astra get it done about every 5000  miles, it's easier to keep track  ;) ;)

Ok maybe 50 mpg is pushing it a bit, but there is no way it should be in the low 30's on a 70 mile round trip.

as for the oil, genuinely though i was on the ball with my change routine ! oh well it's due now anyway so time to jack her up !

Did you reset the avg mpg when you are doing 70

Yes I reset all trip counters, but wont know if its lying until I top up after I've got through half a tank. done about 140 miles at the mo and the needle has dropped to about 1/4 tank used.

Omega General Help / High fuel consumption.

The dashboard readout tells me that my fuel consumption is around 30 - 33 mpg. This is doing runs on the open road at 70 mph so i should be getting somewhere around the 50 mark.
Have filled the tank completely and will verify the fuel figures once I've got through half a tank.

There are no fault codes present and I had the emissions checked which it passed through without any hesitation, the oil level is correct , last changed 10 months ago (6000 miles).Had the car on a ramp and inspected for leaks, found nothing but thats not to say one does'nt exist.

Recent work includes crankshaft sensor replacement, and angle of rotation sensor replacement on fuel pump. The fuel pump issue was carried out about 4 months ago but it is only in the last month whilst doing high mileage that I've noticed a consumption problem.

If anyone can give me some direction, it would be greatly appreciated.Thanks.
