High fuel consumption.
« on: 15 March 2011, 17:01:31 »

2.2 Tdi Elite 03

The dashboard readout tells me that my fuel consumption is around 30 - 33 mpg. This is doing runs on the open road at 70 mph so i should be getting somewhere around the 50 mark.
Have filled the tank completely and will verify the fuel figures once I've got through half a tank.

There are no fault codes present and I had the emissions checked which it passed through without any hesitation, the oil level is correct , last changed 10 months ago (6000 miles).Had the car on a ramp and inspected for leaks, found nothing but thats not to say one does'nt exist.

Recent work includes crankshaft sensor replacement, and angle of rotation sensor replacement on fuel pump. The fuel pump issue was carried out about 4 months ago but it is only in the last month whilst doing high mileage that I've noticed a consumption problem.

If anyone can give me some direction, it would be greatly appreciated.Thanks.

Where does this figure come from? My 1.7TD Astra only does 45-ish mpg

You should be changing it more frequently than this. They suggest 3/4000 miles here although my Astra get it done about every 5000  miles, it's easier to keep track  ;) ;)

Yes I reset all trip counters, but wont know if its lying until I top up after I've got through half a tank. done about 140 miles at the mo and the needle has dropped to about 1/4 tank used.

Ok maybe 50 mpg is pushing it a bit, but there is no way it should be in the low 30's on a 70 mile round trip.

as for the oil, genuinely though i was on the ball with my change routine ! oh well it's due now anyway so time to jack her up !

The dashboard readout was correct in terms of fuel. I changed fuel and air filter and renewed the oil. I'm now getting around the 40 MPG mark which is a considerable improvement  :)

the first half of the full tank has more than the rest of the 1/2 tank if that makes sense.
