Battery life - you're missing the point, with a standard e-reader, she doesn't have to remember to charge it, or have to beg/borrow/steal a charger whilst away. It sits in her handbag, ready for all occasions.

Weight - a Nexus 7 would need a car battery to be as useful as an e-reader (for reading books), due to poor battery life.

Design - if a combined device, as shown in that link, had a case, you'd be constantly removing and flipping it round in its case, detracting from usefulness.

Battery - Samsung claim just over 10 hours with the Nexus, the OH gets 8+ all day long with a combination of reading & playing puzzle type games.
If she turned the Wi-Fi off then I suspect she'd make the 10 hours that Samsung claim.

Weight - See above.

Design - I agree.

I would add, I caught H reading on her mobile last night. After all the decisions and help from people here to get her paperwhite up and running, she's not using it.

Why? Because she wants to listen to music at the same time.     !

On the other hand, if you want a device that does the job well, you're better off with the "one trick pony", IMHO. Depends if you're prepared to compromise for the convenience of having everything in one box.

If you want a decent browser, you're better off with a PC than a smart TV.
If you want a decent camera, you're better off with a dedicated camera than a mobile phone.
If you want a decent e-reader you're better off with a kindle... etc.

Anyone who has a smartphone is carrying a little box of compromises. A Swiss Army knife of compromises in the name of convenience.

There's no way I'm carrying around a;

Torch, and yes it's a torch much better than most torches I'm given as a "better" torch. Isn't it TB...? ;D
Web Brouser
Email
Text
Phone
Cam corder
Camera
Weather station
Compass
Calculator
Games
Books
Music player
Video player
Etc etc etc

Why would somebody not want an e reader added to that list at the flip of a device? Be it a tablet, smartphone or whatever?  Ok, Kevin Wood wouldn't as he hates mobile phones. But if your going to invent a new aspect to mobile technology, a mobile phone is going to offer the best market to get started in. Tablets cam come later.

As said in the video, the battery life in conjunction with a power saving screen can give the owner another dimension in mobility he or she can use as required. If near a charge point obviously the LCD screen is preferred. If no power available, use the eink job.

Where's the loss? :) it's a win win. Rare thing in life ime. Cost dependent if course.

I suppose the only way to improve that duel screen design is to be able to view both from one side. If LCD could be made completely transparent somehow, to be able to view the eink underneath...? Probably not possible currently, as they'd have done that instead.

Anyway, thisis the mobile device market we're talking about. Not for everyone, true enough. ;)

Pretty sure the Kindle can. And without having to go anywhere near gayTunes that crApple products are tied to.

However, even it if didn't, to protect our preciious eyes, I'd read on Kindle, and listen to music off the phone/gayPod/MP3 player.

If we all had blonde hair, we'd naturally understand where she's coming from. But as we don't.... :-X ;)

My brother and I got Mum a Kindle Fire for Christmas. It's her first such device, and once set up and registered, has hardly put it down.

Personally I have a (gay) Sony tablet, which I find large enough for browsing/watching films etc, whilst being small and light enough to be readily portable. Battery life leaves a little to be desdired, but at least it's not an Ipad ::)

Seems to be reasonably robust too :-X
