Just to clarify a bit, the website is run by VOSA, the vehicle operating standards agency, the web details are on the reverse of every new style computer printed MOT certificate. To access the status/history of your car you need 2 of these 3 things
1 - Reg Number
2 -Vehicle reg document ( V5C ) reference number
3 - MOT pass or fail certificate number.
You can obtain, free of charge all the MOT details for your car from the introduction of computerised MOT certs. the starting point of these vary as they were introduced gradually throughout the country.
The page will also show any ADVISORIES that were noticed at the time of the test, an advisory is an item which, at the time of the test, was not bad enough to fail but will require attention, good examples are tyres and exhausts. If a tyre is on or around the legal limit, the tester cannot fail it, he/she can only advise, if an exhaust has the entire outer skin missing it cannot be failed unless it is blowing to excess ( you are allowed a minor leak ) or in danger of falling off. There are many grey areas in MOT testing and a lot of items are down to the testers discretion, the tester can only record the testable items in the condition at the time of the test, this includes recording the mileage on the clock. Any mileage discrepancies are picked up on the National Mileage Register and on HPI, I believe VOSA sell this info to them to try and combat mileage fraud. Of course this depends on the buyer checking things out and also if the discrepancy has shown up, it can take weeks to get this info onto outside databases. The government is trying to make things better but as always the criminals are one step ahead. At a big car auction that we buy from, Central in Glasgow, if a buyer is not known to the auction house or does not have a trade account they must provide proof of identity, people were buying in false names, clocking the car, selling it on and if there was a comeback the auction did not know the buyers true details, this may have happened to you. On a lighter note, one of the spurious names given was, and bear in mind this is in Scotland;

W. Howard ? Any ideas ? The electric hand dryers in toilets are made by Warner Howard. The rest I'm sure you'll recognise.
Goodnight, my fingers are aching!!!
