if you have the tools and dvd its not hard,a tip i would pass on to a cambelt newbie is if you can lay your hands on a portable dvd player, you can watch a section and then do the work ,then watch the next section etc;it makes the job less intimidating the first time you do it . :y

yes i would definately go along with this one, or even better do what i done, use a laptop, so that if you get stuck you will have access to the wealth of info on here.

my vectra 1997 has been clocked aswell although i ran a hpi check when i bought it it flagged up that when it was disposed of by Northampton police in 2001 it had 134k on it and when i bought it it had 79k it didnt really bother me as the car was very cheap and had 12months tax n test on it so i was happy

my mig however has a genuine mileage of 115k every test and service recipt is with the car so im happy :D

lots of crs are easy to clock and anyone with a laptop and usb lead can clock a volkwagen group car as the Diagnostics kit allows you to alter the speedo readings!

what i finally found out was the bloke i bought the car from lives in gloucester. not maidenhead where i met him. the car dealer who sold the car to this bloke gave me the mileage he had on the mot, which was 92 thou. so the bloke i bought it from clocked it. and i havent a leg to stand on as he is not a trader. trading standards also said. you buy as seen. you pay for what youve bought.
what annoyed me was at the time i see my car and an elite same price but mine had done 30 thous less miles. thats why i bought it.

my facelift is on 109k now, you could set it to 55k and your average buyer would think its genuine!

Mine has 97,000 on the clock with the font bumper done and the brake pedal rubber replaced i could pass it off as having half the mileage it has with no problems at all

no wonder ive had all these probs

Just to clarify a bit, the website is run by VOSA, the vehicle operating standards agency, the web details are on the reverse of every new style computer printed MOT certificate. To access the status/history of your car you need 2 of these 3 things
1 - Reg Number
2 -Vehicle reg document ( V5C ) reference number
3 - MOT pass or fail certificate number.
You can obtain, free of charge all the MOT details for your car from the introduction of computerised MOT certs. the starting point of these vary as they were introduced gradually throughout the country.
The page will also show any ADVISORIES that were noticed at the time of the test, an advisory is an item which, at the time of the test, was not bad enough to fail but will require attention, good examples are tyres and exhausts. If a tyre is on or around the legal limit, the tester cannot fail it, he/she can only advise, if an exhaust has the entire outer skin missing it cannot be failed unless it is blowing to excess ( you are allowed a minor leak ) or in danger of falling off. There are many grey areas in MOT testing and a lot of items are down to the testers discretion, the tester can only record the testable items in the condition  at the time of the test, this includes recording the mileage on the clock. Any mileage discrepancies are picked up on the National Mileage Register and on HPI, I believe VOSA sell this info to them to try and combat mileage fraud. Of course this depends on the buyer checking things out and also if the discrepancy has shown up, it can take weeks to get this info onto outside databases. The government is trying to make things better but as always the criminals are one step ahead. At a big car auction that we buy from, Central in Glasgow, if a buyer is not known to the auction house or does not have a trade account they must provide proof of identity, people were buying in false names, clocking the car, selling it on and if there was a comeback the auction did not know the buyers true details, this may have happened to you. On a lighter note, one of the spurious names given was, and bear in mind this is in Scotland;
Mr. W. Howard
6 GLENN CLOSE
KIRK DOUGLAS.
W. Howard ? Any ideas ? The electric hand dryers in toilets are made by Warner Howard. The rest I'm sure you'll recognise.
Goodnight, my fingers are aching!!!
