I replaced the cam covers on mine fir the alloy covers from a Vectra and have had no problems whatsoever in the past 18months since they have been fitted.... :y

And you're aware of the possible problems in future ?

So long as he keeps an eye on the breathers (which we all should be doing, but invariably get busy with life) there's no issue with fitting alloy covers.  :)

Alloy covers not for me, personally, but so long as you're aware of the risks, no issue.  :)

I'm aware of that by now :) How many breather should I keep an eye on?
Only in inlet manifold and throttle body breathers or there are more?

You're aware of keeping an eye on them, but don't know how many there are? haha, rolls eyes.  :)

Ok, the long black part on the engine top, marked 'EcoTec', contains 4 pipes/tubes. These need to be clear. Also then the pipes that come off the end of this piece at the back. Two of these go onto the metal box in the picture above, by Andy H. The inside builds up sludge/rubbish/crud but the holes will need to be clear.

Getting to it all can give you back pain, but it's worth it  :y

Where's the box located at?
Can't figure it out...

The box I believe is the bigger circumference the hoses are the smaller circumference...
Do I need any gasket to refit the box?

Yes, you're right, the box is 'the bigger circumference'. You don't need a gasket because you don't need to remove it to clean it, simply use a drill bit of the correct size (as it says in the link / url I posted) to clean the inlet/outlets of the pipe.

The 'smaller circumference' you say are connected to the breather bridge (ecotec black plastic piece) but there are four pipes in total which need to be clear. These are easy to see when you are sitting on top of the engine.  :y

I assume that the other end of the hose is open correct?

Yes. It will be clear when you look at the engine, but that pipe, and the thicker one next to it both connect to the 'ecotec' plastic part on the top of the engine.  :)

Don't worry, so long as you have 4 pipes connected to the rear of the breather bridge /Ecotec part of the engine, you're fine. That open pipe is the breather for the gearbox oil.

Just make sure it's tucked away somewhere pointed away where muck/dust/water can't get inside. That's a line straight down into your gearbox  :y

I have always wondered about this hose.
I suppose the mechanic might have made some changes!
Do you think that a small filter would be ok?

They're supposed to be like that, that's how they left the factory. Most automatic cars have some form of open pipe like that somewhere in the engine bay. Just tuck it behind the engine and you'll be fine.

I bend mine so the open end points downwards, so nothing can get in.  :)
