Smells like burned oil? Breathers cleaning?
« on: 24 October 2015, 19:43:39 »

8 months ago, my mechanic (which proved to be a really bad mechanic) has toke the cam covers, clean both of them and replaced with new gaskets.
Some cleaning etc and the old oil burned smell went way for 5 months or so!
Now after changing the engine oil I'm getting the oil level a little bit lower and plenty of burned oil smell. I suspect that I will have to redo the cam covers gasket...
In the way I've read about making the cam cover mod (aluminium X25XE to X30XE) and I came across with breathers cleaning while reading...

First it is the cam cover mod a option?
Second, I've been trying to understand how the breather cleaning job can it be achieved but no clue. Is there any proper tutorial?

There is a guide in maintenance section on cleaning breathers[it's a pretty straight forward job] Alloy cam covers can be used but
1] They put the oil filler cap in a more awkward to use place
2] As far as I understand it if alloy covers are used any future blockage of the breather system or other pressure issues can result in the rear crankshaft oil seal failing instead of cam cover gaskets. This is a much more difficult and therefore costly job to do.
As a result fitting alloy covers generally not a recommended "upgrade".Others will no doubt be along to advise better.

Cleaning crankcase breather system tutorial is in the maintenance guide section under "V6 engine section " :y

Someone may post you a link to it  . . . but I cant :-[ :-[

Cam cover gaskets must be genuine GM gaskets  . . .not cheap pattern  as they will almost always have a very short life before leaks occur again  :( :(   alloy covers not recommended by most on here as this just pushes the problem elsewhere at greater expense. . . . crankshaft oil seals  ::) ::) ::)

I hope this helps you  :y

So cam covers mod is out of question...
I got the link http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/index.php?topic=90653.0  :)

About the cam cover gasket replacement is it a difficult job to do?

Straightforward enough :y

Given you don't trust the mechanic who did the work previously, I would consider buying new covers, with seals, from GM... they have a tendency to warp if over tightened, meaning they will never seal successfully :-\

There is an aluminium 'oil separator' box behind bank 1 cylinder head that the two breather hoses connect to. The smaller pipe connection only has a small hole in it to limit the quantity of fumes that are sucked into the inlet manifold.

The first Omega I had must have been neglected or clocked (or both) and I found that this aluminium box was almost full of solidified gunge and the small hole was blocked. I gave up trying to clean the box and bought a new one. With a new oil separator box, clean breathers and new cam cover gaskets it didn't leak again in 70000 miles :y

Bearing in mind the OP's background, he lives in Portugal, as well as he possibly struggles a bit with our language, IMO I don't see this as a issue . Admin will move it if they consider it will cause a problem .

I also notice that no one who has answered his post, myself included, had advised or suggested that he puts it in the  right section, in this case & for the OP's  future posting, this sort of Omega based question should go into "Omega General Help" & not General Disscussion  :y

Covers are about 3 years and are GM...
Seals replaced second time.

I really do not trust none of the mechanics that have assisted the Omega.
They have big hands and at the end there are always parts missing
During the last repairs I came across with loads of missing parts mostly screws and rubbers... broken plastics and bent tubes etc I will have have a lot to put in place.

The official dealer have asked me for 490€ + vat for the idle air control valve plus labbor!
I cant afford that and even if I could I wouldn't pay that much is wrong!

Idle air control valve,if that's the bit I'm thinking of[with a rubber hose going to the front of it an electrical connector to the back and pushed into side of plenum]then although I can't recall how much I paid for one-but they're not hugely expensive-they're only a couple of minutes to fit,so 490 euros sounds a heck of a lot too much!

You bet, I've found quite a number of shops with good prices and great services in uk.
To name a few:

genuinepartsearch.co.uk
vauxhallworldparts.com
lmfvauxhall.co.uk
sparepartstore24.co.uk

And there is always ebay.co.uk, amazon.co.uk...
I'm glad to say that I'm one of the last owners of an Opel Omega MV6 3.0 in Portugal, less than 5 running on petrol.
You can still see a few running on diesel from time to time. I've only saw one like mine in all these years!
But maintenance is terrible expensive, what can I do, I really love this car great great vehicle!

I wish I have a community like yours... thank you very much for your support.
