3.2 have a cat problems which not occur in 2.6.

Just came back here as i forgot to mention the pre cat issue which causes the eml to come on. But i see you have mentioned it. But was not aware it only affects the 3.2. Is this correct? And if so why? Does the 2.6 not have pre cats?

Yes. Same setup on the 2.6 but they seem to cope with the output of the smaller engine better. Still not uncommon to have a problem. Mick Dundee's 2.6 did.

2.6 have (same) precats as 3.2 but this problem does only affects 3.2. Don’t know why, maybe due to extra capacity (extra 300ccm) or pressure. It’s not just Vauxhall, other cars have the same problem, for example some of the Toyotas. They found that the problem was oil and petrol during the (cold) start up. These are to protect main cats, but gets most of the bad stuff when engine is cold. Precats are near to combustion chamber and unburned oil and petrol leaves a deposit on precats and block them. Pressure is rising and so does the temperature. This starts to melt down ceramic and deposits and small pieces are getting back to combustion chamber and scratch surfaces. This allowes more oil to come out and wore out the engine. But it’s only a Toyota and only an extreme situations.

And one more, maybe obvious, but worth mention – Road TAX on cars registered after 01.03.2001 (might got the date wrong) is much higher than before that date! It might be extra £100-150 and plans are to increase in next few years (up to £400 for 3.2.)

2.6 are affected by this issue, though more common on 3.2

My 2.6 had the precat issue, before it decided that was too minor a quirk and threw all its toys out of the pram...

I should do what everyone tells me and change my 3.2 V6 - but it is so good to drive I could not justify the difference to the BMW 730d which people think I shoud buy. Omega Elite is a great car - not reflected by the value you can sell them for = I will keep it. If you can get a 3.2 Elite go for it subject to condition issue as a bad one could cost you loads. A good one is a dream in terms of value for money and performance

depending on the priorities..

performance or low fuel cost..  but not all together..

and the optimum avg  of the two is not a good choice imho..

Both our 2.2's have been mega-reliable and the cdx has virtually all the toys, but would go for a V6 next time, mainly for the much nicer sound! ;)
