If you add onto those figures the children and other depandants,we must be approaching ,one half of the country working to keep the other half.
Obviously people who are genuinely too disabled to go out to work etc should be taken care off,but those who could work but dont want to....

I'm sure there are plenty of people like myself who are perfectly capable of working but at the moment just can't find anyone who'll give them a job. 

I'm overqualified.  And, despite the age discrimination laws, it seems I'm too old.

And, having been out of work for more than 6 months, let me tell you that the taxpayer is not contributing anything other than a National Insurance Stamp to my welfare.

Regrettably, the unemployable will always be with us.  Quite honestly, without the use of chain gangs or martial law, the layabouts to whom you refer will never make a useful contribution to society.  Give them jobs as postmen, say, and they'll chuck your mail in the river to finish early.  Get them digging up the road, and traffic will be disrupted for weeks as they "accidentally" put their digger through the water or gas main.  I wouldn't want to live in a house on which one of these idlers has worked.

Sorry, but if we want to live in a relatively free society, we've just got to put up with them.

You may be right but imo we shouldnt have to give them a large slice of our wages.Personally I would rather see them starved into doing a days graft.

Once we get this country back on track, with a new Government creating the financial environment for all those youngsters who worked hard to gain their 'A' levels, then to obtain degrees, so that the 40% of gradutes from just last year who cannot get jobs do so, then we can make all of youngsters go out to work.

However, reality is 'the system' has let them all down, with so many seeing no hope in the future.  Instead of kicking the youngsters, let us kick very hard the Government into touch!!  They are the real ones to blame.

The official unemployment figures in Spain are 18%. There is little in the way of social security in comparison with the UK. Certainly single mothers get precious little - the parents are expected to help out.

One good thing here is that the unemployed do a lot of community work in return for some taxable dosh. The men(and some women) do ditch clearing, concreting gulleys, painting the town hall and probably best of all helping old people get around to do their shopping, go to the doc's and so on. Sadly I really can't see that working in Britain though as there isn't the community Id or spirit.

Sounds like a good idea varche.
A levels and degrees have been dumbed down and diluted so are worth a lot less as jobseeking currency than they used to be.They were intended for the acedemically able originally but in recent years it has been policy to try to get the majority of the young to have lots of "A grade" qualifications and then progress to university,this naturally decreases the value of such qualifications imo.

I would volunteer to help the single mothers. You know, changing the bed, stuff like that

I too are overqualified for the job i'm in at the moment, but their's room for me to move eventually.

The one's that really get my anger roused are like the one's that live just over the road from me. They have three kids, a cat & a dog that barks, because they shut it out (they're even too idle to take it for a walk).
They stand outside the door smoking & i just wana walk across & punch them in the mouth (i had to come in the other night, because i could feel my self going). I/we pay for their fags, kids, dog & cat, but when i was made redundant & because i live alone, i have no kids i get a pintance. I've worked for 27 years since leaving school.
Seems to me that you work & save, but then get dekcuf over by the system, but if you turn out kids & do naff all you get everything.
