On a serious note, I think we can conclude that this problem only affects post-2001 facelifts..? This will explain why I was told (rightly or wrongly) that it is linked to the Drive-by-Wire. And also that it is not affected by the autobox firmware update...

I have another small anomaly which may be a 'post-2001 facelift' issue - my rev meter does not resigner between 1500 and 2000... it just hops up or down straight from 1500 to 2000, instead of moving progressively. The engine sound fine, so it is not real.... this does not occur at any other part of the rev meter. Also, when the car was new Vx changed the instrument panel under warranty, but I had this problem from new and the problem persisted after the swap, so it is not an instrument panel issue. Anyone else noticed this?

Mine doesnt do that and doesnt sound normal to me......doesnt the rev counter get fed straight from the ecu?

Just curious to know if someone else has this problem... if it is indeed a fault on my car, it is not one that I intend to do anything about...
