Try some Holts speedflush, its about a fiver from Halfords. I always use lots of water and them remove the rad and fill it with Fernox which is for household central heating systems but I wouldn't use it in an engine

is the red removal quite a straigh forward job, ie can i do it on my own or will i need an extra pair of hands

Its just a bit fiddly but easy enough to do.
