I stay not to far from a refinery (delivered many pizzas there) so have seen all the major supermarket lorrys and independant ones getting filled at the same place bp grangemouth as far as i'm led to beleive theres only 95 unleaded 98 super/optimax unleaded and diesel Oh and gas oil ;)

The base fuel yes, its the additives that are added to the tankers that makes the difference.

Here is a typical picture of a 2.6 head after 100K miles:

and the valves (note the state of the inlet vales in particular!)

Here is a photo of a head off a higher mileage 3.0 which had been run on the better fuels with occasional fuel treatment added.

The photos speak for themselves.

I would check with Mike on the fuel used - that gunge is from oil burning

Now that is a clean head !.

I've run Tesco 95 in the Omega for the last 60k miles (just under 2 years of driving) and I have tried the higher octane BP ultimate a few times. Didnt really notice any difference in either fuel consumption, smoothness of running or extra power. But then I am doing 90% of my driving on motorways and DC's

When testing I ran 3 tanks through each time to ensure I had pure 97 rather than 95. Being normally aspirated any benefit from the higher octane is going to be minimal in terms of power gains.

I had heard that the BP Ultimate kept the heads clean and I do run every third tank on BP through my other cars to keep them clean (ish) but with the mileage I do in the miggy its not cost effective as I dont see any MPG or obvious power increase.

I live on the Suffolk coast and from my window I can see about 20 large oil tankers which have been sitting there for some weeks now.

They are waiting for the price of oil to increase, fair do's, but what is happening to the oil they are storing, what is it absorbing?

If you buy Shell oil it comes straight from the refinery, I guess BP and Esso are the same. If you buy from a Supermarket you could regret it.

I only use Texaco 95 fuel in my Omega - used it in all my cars for the past four years with no problems. Occasionally put 97 in as it seems a bit smoother. Big bonus is that the local Texaco garage is actually cheaper than the nearest supermarket station, as they are more than two miles from each other, so the Tesco's does not feel a need to compete... currently, the Texaco garage is 2p a litre cheaper!  :y
