Choice of fuel ?
« on: 12 November 2009, 18:05:47 »

Hi all.. Anyone got any views on where you should buy your fuel from , and dont say garage  :)  ?
In these times of things being tight the supermarkets seem tempting and have to admit i do use them sometimes mainly for the so called special offers but, i hear that they dont put the additives to the fuel that the oil companies do... any words of wisdom or experience anyone ?   :D

I've only ever used Tesco 95 octane fuel in every car ive had, including my 3 omegas, and never experienced any problem while using it  :y

Its quite clear that the better fuels do keep the engine internals nice and clean (seen this first hand)......but a regular dose of good fuel treatment (i.e. Forte) will give similar results.

same as that. Cars bikes vans. Never noticed any odds between shell optimax (or v power or whatever they are calling it now) and cheapo spasda unleaded.

Only time it made any odds was when a local bike tuner recommended to use the highest octane fuel, "where available" on an old race bike i had. Used unleaded once when we couldnt fine optimax and made no noticeable difference.

I do beleive its been proven to make no odds in tests for the road.

Have to confess I filled up from empty (7 miles range on MID) with BP Ultimate last week before setting off to Liverpool from Herts with the thought that it might do the fuel system some good. Although I had only used half a tank before returning I filled up again with Ultimate in Preston so I didn't have to stop on the way back. Total 458 miles, achieved 31.8mpg including town and sitting in roadworks.
(2.2CD Auto). Not bad, even though approx £4 more per tankfull.  I'm convinced the engine is idling smoother. Any views?  :)

It would have been a shorter journey if you didnt go via Preston :)

Sorry but I do about 2500 miles a month and the 'super' fuels 'DO' make a difference, yes they cost more but having used the 'Shell' version it gives better mpg and the engine just runs, better, smoother, whatever.

like i said earlier ive been using the Tesco 95 octane fuel in my cars , but ive been thinking lately about trying the 99 octane one, is it ok to mix the 2 types? as i generally dont let me "range" drop below 100 miles when it come to refilling it, so id probably still have a gallon or two of the 95 in the tank :question

I found the same! I think its more noticeable in the 4pots due to the nature of the engines, the smooth V6s seem the same on both fuels at idle.

I find BP Ultimate also gives a little more poke above 4.5krpm, must treat mine to a tank full, not had some in ages.
