Is it advised to replace the housing on the 3.2 with a stat change? I know some cars require it due corrosion etc.
Genuine stat only available with housing :y

Yep, and in my case the earlier housing was supplied which required the mounting bolts to be shortened. It is possible to remove the stat from the housing so I'm guessing it could have been swapped into the old housing.

The seal you need depends on the housing too, as said.

Best to tell AndyC what you're doing and get him to send you a kit of bits to cover all eventualities.

I reckon mine was knackered when I bought the car @ 40k/4 years old. It's certainly never run much above 80-85 all the time I've had it.

Just to mention, the bastward bolt is a torx, with no way of getting a halfords set ratchet on it, which is the only torx most of us have.
Ideally you want the correct size torx spanner, because there have been instances where the torx bolt has been stubborn and rounded off when resorting to a hex spanner, which sort of fits and does the job in most instances but "may" slip.

If the torx bolt rounds off with a hex, a torx spanner won't fit too well, and given poor access as the bolt is concealed by the transfer pipe removing a rounded bolt is...a challenge, shall we say!

To be belt and braces it may be worth acquiring the correct size torx spanner first? Or at the very least crack that bolt loose first, then you know you can at least finish the job, provided the transfer pipe comes off of course. :)

I don't know if any of these are the right size, but, I bought a set of these from Halfords: http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_177477_langId_-1_categoryId_165572

Yep, that'll do it. E10 or E12 would be my guess.

I'm trying to recall how I got mine off. I think I got a socket on it, TBH.

On non DBW engines, you can push the PAS pipe down out of the way to get socket on.  Not sure on DBW V6...

Yes you can push the PAS pipe out the way, it jambs forward nicely.

Remember to release it if you want power assistance to your steering  ;D
