And another thing....3.2 Temp.
« on: 21 November 2011, 15:47:05 »

As the TD temp sensors are suspect, I'm using the 3.2 Elite this week, and...b****r...the temp doesn't go above 80'. I guess its the 'stat?

On a motorway run in winter mine doesn't go much about 80 either.. 85 around town, just over 90ish in traffic and then the fans cut in.

I thought it was the stat, then convinced myself (well, KevinW did, in replies to my posts) that it was all fine really.. now I'm not so sure again  ;D

I thought the perceived wisdom on here was that it should sit midway? ??? ??? ???

They do appear to have a failure mode that causes them to run a little cool. Mine did the same, yet would still warm up reasonably quickly.

In the end I decided to change the thermostat as it was all coming apart anyway. With the new thermostat it warms up quickly to 85 indicated and stays between there and just over 90 under all conditions.

Having just read the maintenance guide, I'm not looking forward to changing it! :( :( :(

Mine also seems to sit at around 80 most of the time, which I think is a little cool.I think I will live with it until next summer and then probably change the stat when I reinstall the front end of the LPG.

Yup, sounds like a stat issue. Mines at 85 within just a few mins  :)

It wasn't as bad a job as I'd imagined it might be. The trick is to loosen the seal between the transfer pipe and thermostat housing before undoing the bastard bolt (which also wan't too bad).

Doing it with a cam belt change is a good plan, because you get much better access to the thermostat housing once the tensioner backplate is out of the way, and it's much easier to clean up the mating face of the engine block.

Point taken Kevin, I would like to do my cam-belt anyway, but it will have to wait a while as I have a kitchen to fit. :y

Indeed, fairly common with the DBW 3.2.  Not sure why that stat should be more prone than 2.5/3.0, seeing as same part...

...maybe its because the DBW ones are all coming to 8/9yrs old, so tired stats, and all the 2.5/3.0 have already been changed a few years back?

Late engines have different stat, at least the housing is different, hence the seal also which is a "real" seal instead of "normal" with the o-ring type seal. Newer housing is alot "sturdier", more robust design, don't know why they changed it because the "older" type is interchangeable and quite reliable...

Is it advised to replace the housing on the 3.2 with a stat change? I know some cars require it due corrosion etc.

Most commonly available as a "kit", e.g. housing WITH stat, IIRC welded together. Only separate parts are stat seal/oring, transfer pipe and its two o-rings.
