Rats! And other mild expletives...
« on: 05 July 2013, 15:54:26 »

Just been down to the garage where they had that Volvo I was thinking about.  He was preparing it to go - bloke saw it on the internet and has come all the way down from West Lothian to look at it - one of the staff was on the way to Ipswich station to collect him.

Took my wife to have a look at it last night - very unenthusiastic.  Her point (a very good one) is that it doesn't make sense to change one 14 year-old car for another.  She noticed an Astra on the forecourt and said why don't I get one like that, rendering me totally speechless.  Anyway, while I was mourning the loss of the Volvo, I thought I'd look at the Astra.  Turned out to be a 1.6 auto.  Nice clean car, reasonable price, boot the size of a matchbox, cloth seats, airco, but no cruise control (not that it's likely to ever go fast enough to justify one).  But, really, after an Omega?  Think I'd rather walk.

Anyway, the bloke at the garage took my phone number in case he got anything else in that might be suitable.  Five minutes ago, he rang up and said the bloke from Scotland had decided not to buy the Volvo.  He offered me the same deal as 2 days ago, with a bit more off to compensate for mucking me about, which he didn't, as far as I'm concerned.  Said that the traveller had found a paintwork blemish on the bumper.

Now, if a bloke spends all day and £120 travelling from West Lothian to Ipswich, and then decides he doesn't want the car, I'm inclined to think there may have been a bit more wrong with it than a scratch on the bumper.  I think I may start walking away quite rapidly...

Suspect if they have traveled that far, there was a reason and he/she knew that shape Volvo inside out. Just like people here willing to travel for an Omega, they know what to look for.

Keep looking  :y

Could always ask for an independent inspection on the Volvo & do an HPI as well

My regular garage man David has said he'll gladly inspect anything I might be thinking about - I trust him on most things to do with cars.  I had actually told him about the Volvo, and he said it sounded OK - not as complicated as the Omega, and when it goes wrong, replacement parts are cheaper and easier to get hold of.

What's HPI - something to do with finance?

Yeah, but I can't wait for it to find me!  Going to Scotland for my holiday in about 4 weeks time, and the Omega ain't gonna make it!  Just thinking about doing 1000 miles on fast roads in an Astra gives me the willies!

How about this?

http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/index.php?topic=115652.0

Saw it.  Been thinking about it.  Fear boss will raise same argument as she did about the Volvo.  Is it a Y-plate or an 03-plate - says both.

Also, discovered that my son is renting a car to drive to Liverpool in a couple of weeks time, so I may go and look at the car up there if it's still around.

Its Y, the 03 is referring to the age of the alloys (later style of Elite alloys)  :y
