Just been down to the garage where they had that Volvo I was thinking about. He was preparing it to go - bloke saw it on the internet and has come all the way down from West Lothian to look at it - one of the staff was on the way to Ipswich station to collect him.
Took my wife to have a look at it last night - very unenthusiastic. Her point (a very good one) is that it doesn't make sense to change one 14 year-old car for another. She noticed an Astra on the forecourt and said why don't I get one like that, rendering me totally speechless. Anyway, while I was mourning the loss of the Volvo, I thought I'd look at the Astra. Turned out to be a 1.6 auto. Nice clean car, reasonable price, boot the size of a matchbox, cloth seats, airco, but no cruise control (not that it's likely to ever go fast enough to justify one). But, really, after an Omega? Think I'd rather walk.
Anyway, the bloke at the garage took my phone number in case he got anything else in that might be suitable. Five minutes ago, he rang up and said the bloke from Scotland had decided not to buy the Volvo. He offered me the same deal as 2 days ago, with a bit more off to compensate for mucking me about, which he didn't, as far as I'm concerned. Said that the traveller had found a paintwork blemish on the bumper.
Now, if a bloke spends all day and £120 travelling from West Lothian to Ipswich, and then decides he doesn't want the car, I'm inclined to think there may have been a bit more wrong with it than a scratch on the bumper. I think I may start walking away quite rapidly...
