I have come to the conclusion that it's knackered. (Hope that terminology is ok? ;D)

I reckon it got dropped in the post.

She went and bought another one from a shop and it was up and running in a couple of minutes. ::)

please excuse the silly question, but have you contacted the supplier and told them it was dead on arrival, I would have thought that the sale of goods act applies in this case( eg merchantable quality !) perhaps someone else can clarify the point !

Yes she has asked for a refund. Distance selling regulations apply I think?

unless I'm wrong, you are correct in the assumption that distance selling reg's come into play, as well as the sale of goods act. unless i'm mistaken distance selling was introduced to allow faulty goods sold by mail order to be rectified to the satisfaction of the buyer ( if received as faulty goods , as your daughters appears to be ) !
