Graphics card problem.
« on: 05 July 2013, 18:31:35 »

Hi everyone.

My daughter has just bought a Radeon HD 7870 graphics card and a new 780w power supply.

I installed them both and connected the 2 six pin power connectors from the new power supply.

The problem is that when the computer boots there is nothing, just a black screen. She is running Windows 7.

Any ideas?

Thanks for any help. :y

She is having a right flap about it. ::)

How many beeps does it do on startup?

Does it have any other VGA/DVI connections, such as on the motherboard?

There was 3 beeps on the first attempt, then none at all but is sounds like it's booting up ok..

It has 2 PCIe slots, no vga.

Double check RAM is secure & not disturbed.

Ok.

It runs fine when I put the old graphics card back.

What is the "old" graphics card?

Is the new "780W" power supply a branded item or cheap Chinese shite costing £50?

The old card is radeon 4600 I think.

The power supply was £60 from Maplins.

Try setting the old graphics card into 640x480 resolution and shutdown the PC. Install the new card and its drivers and then set the card at the required higher resolution.

To display above 640x480 it is hit and miss whether it will work without the correct drivers installed.

Right click with the mouse on the desktop and select properties to change the screen resolution.

I tried installing both graphics cards as there are two PCIe slots. The PC doesn't detect that the new card is in there at all. I've tried 'add new hardware' but it's as if the graphics card doesn't exist.

I'm starting to think that the card got damaged in the post.

I'll try it on another computer today.

Thanks for all your suggestions. I've tried them but not had any luck.
