I always forget which way to turn the adjuster.

Once you've beaten the disk into submission

Glad I'm not alone on those two points 

The adjuster threads aren't sided... to adjust the shoes apart right hand side is up and left hand side is down
To back them off is opposite

Nope, depends which way round they've been put in. They are standard thread, so it depends if star faces forward or back

In that case, if the adjuster star is ahead of the axle line, then what I said stands , if behind then it will be opposite
