I would too have suggested straight away reporting the seller

if a seller lists an item without a reserve he MUST agree to sell for the winning bid amount. if he wants a certain amount he must state a reserve price in its appropriate place on the listing (minimum £50 by ebay rules)

he's basically only listed this way to avoid the fees he'd have had to pay for a reserve auction

the risk you run of being the high bidder at auction close is that he's extremely likely to leave you negative feedback if your bid isnt what he wants and you refuse to pay more than your winning bid, then you'd have to fart about complaining thru ebay to have the feedback removed!

Ebay contracts are not worth anyting. All you have to do is claim you have noticed damage on the item or lost it and you can end the listing. If it has already ended you just file with ebay to say the same and it all goes away in a very convenient manner.

the problem with ebay is that it is virtually unregulated, and ebay take no responsibility for dodgy people selling stolen or broken items

trouble is, ebay are so big that if you are selling something, you need to use them

i am currently selling my lovely omega on ebay, so will report back on the experience!
