2.5 Gearbox on a 3.0?
« on: 12 October 2007, 14:38:57 »

TB told me a while ago that the 2.5 is about the same on acceleration as the 3.0 due to different gearing.

Is it possible to put the 2.5 box on a 3.0?
If so it should be rapid on acceleration then shouldnt it?

And would the 2.5 box be able to cope with the 3.0 extra power , and poss 250bp if tuned?

If you are talking the autobox, not a hope in hell.

Also, I believe most of the gearing difference (not all though) is on the diff.

I think the 2.5 manual is rated to 250Nm, the 3.0l manual to 280Nm.  So it depends on torque you are aiming for.

Though I suspect Vx fitted a bigger box to 3.0l for a reason....

I know its a big job but it would be possible to use the 3.0 bellhousing and put the 2.5 ratios in wouldnt it?

The bellhousing for both boxes will be the same, it's the internals that will be different.

Both the final drive and gearbox ratios on the 2.5 are different from the 3.0. The actual figures are on autobahnstormers.com

To be honest I don't think it's worth the effort, doing both combined only lowers the ratios about 10% in 5th. Yes the gearing is too high IMO, but the 2.5 isn't that much better. I seem to remember the guy who used to race Omegas on here (can't remember his username  :-[ ) had a significantly higher diff ratio in one, giving a much lower overall ratio. Not sure where he got it though as there isn't much choice for factory Omega diffs and I don't know what else will fit.
