No.....by backing off the adjuster on the shoes you can get the disc off but, when doing this job THE first thing you should do is slacken the cable right off anyway!  :y

Re. the shoe adjusters--does one of them work in reverse i.e one has to be flicked down to loosen of and the other side has to flicked up?

It depends which way round the last person fitted them....if you shine a torch in the hole and flick the adjuster a few times you can soon tell which way it needs to go  :y
