Time ago I experienced erratic idle. Discarded ICV, etc, finally it was due to a defective ECU temp sensor.

Has anyone got Tech2 or "My Naff Code Reader" in NI who can look at live data for you?

When SWMBO got a Golf last year it had similar symptoms. I spent ages checking for air leaks before getting a tool to read live data which told me that the throttle wasn't closing when it should.

Turned out that some clown had glued a sliver of wood inside the throttle motor to prevent it closing properly. This had been done to mask a stalling problem caused by a faulty temperature sensor >:(

Removed the wood, replaced the temperature sensor and cleaned out the breathers and order was restored :y

I would start by checking that there isn't a problem with the brake servo or the vacuum pipe. I can think of other things it might be (temperature sensor, throttle motor) but it doesn't make sense to swap things unless they are known to be faulty.
