Ah, found it: http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-10-26/berlusconi-agrees-to-step-down-by-january-repubblica-says.html

Although .. googling around, this appears to be the 198123th time he's said he'll stand down 'soon' - but he's still there ;D Still, I'll see what my usually cynical Italian friend has to say about that ;) (It's entirely possible he's dancing a little jig right now)

Hence why I stumbled across the wrong link when I googled for it. ;D

I think the Germans and the french are determined to get rid of him.Italy is in one big financial mess (although Berlesconi swears blind there isnt a problem) and if Italy gets into the position that Greece is now in, there will be no way back for their dearly beloved Euro. ;)

If he does step down it'll make little difference as the Italian system of government - and local administration in general -depends on practices that can be deemed to be 'unusual' to say the least. :(

...hasn't it disappeared up it's own jacksy yet?  Sigh...

If that were only the case C - liken the problem to a pair of stubborn doughnut bushes, no amount of persuasion (gentle or otherwise) will get them out, short of open warfare with a big bar - a bar so big we would have to refer to it as a Samuel rather than a sammy. :y

Indeed, Den. Naturally, there's much giggling about Berlusconi's colourful life but, prior to his tenure, Italy has had a long tradition of changing governments every couple of months. Add this to the fact that the Italians (like the Greeks) are likely to get very vociferous if they are told to cut back (and work longer). A recipe for unease, methinks. So, while people crow about him going, worse could be round the corner.  ;)

I take the lazy approach D, it's a problem so self I importent that it doesn't realize you can drive the car, all be it with some irritation, perfectly well with or without! Why huff and puff?

Ignore it! Leave it to rot and collapse all by itself. Job done with feet up!

Only worry then is what might replace it, but there you go.

Although I find all these shenanigans amusing, there is a serious side to it all. At the end of the day someone (rich) will end up losing a lot of money and when that happens the little people always end up paying.

I detect a certain smugness from us Brits in that thank God we never went into the euro and it is now their problem. I suspect that the fallout will also hit Brits - as Cameroon says. I know for certain it will hit residents in Spain. We are getting a new government in November (either Conservative or just maybe a coalition) so I am anticipating austerity measures there unless the Italians offer enough austerity( making the little people poorer) measures. Here is hoping Berly turns up with a shed load of measures to appease the "markets".
