Yes, I agree with much of what Al has said, not to have any form of elected administration in place would lead to utter chaos.
I will also say that should people feel strongly enough about it, they should become part of the process to ensure that their voice his heard when it comes time to choose the next governing party. For that to happen, and happen effectively, people must vote; not to do so makes a mockery of having this hard won right available to us and devalues the advantages of living in a parliamentary democracy (sadly, in this country’s case, that statement is loosely made).
Change needs to happen from the bottom up; the entire system of choosing candidates, how many are put forward for the national parliament, the constituency boundaries and new but effective regulation of the entire system (including those who are ultimately elected) all need to happen if we are not to fall victim to an ‘every man for himself' attitude and are, as a result, made to suffer yet more from the incompetent decisions made by elected representatives who, like many of the present incumbents , are removed from the practical realities of living a life in modern day Britain.
In short – we need leaders, we need imaginative people who are not afraid of making decisions that will be in the interests of this country, we need a system to care for our people not manipulate them but, above all, we need each and every person in this country to take an interest in this vital process and to question those who represent us (or seek to) and to continue to do so.
Discarding the mock concern that many members of the present mongrel government shows when trying to convey their thoughts on the current situation in the country – invariably falling to the phrase of ‘we’re all in this together’ when they’re breaking the news that they will require us to part with even more money – I would suggest that we really are, all of us, in this together: People need to become more responsible, we need to take that interest, we need to question and expect answers but, above all, we need to get off our arses and vote.
