Engine and gearbox software updates
« on: 29 February 2012, 11:49:38 »

I know these are good to have and I had my previous car softwares updated and it made a difference. Now, I'd like to have these updates to my current car but dealer has rised the cost of the updates to astronomical.

Is there any other way to have these installed than TechII? Just an assumption, they are quite simple codes/programs and IF I could have the raw data/program it COULD be entered to ECU's with some other ECU reader? Or am I totally wrong? Or would it be possible, in theory, to find out which parameters are altered and to which figure and then re-set these figures with some generic ECU reader?

Tech 2 is the only way, I'm afraid. Even if other readers claimed to do it, I wouldn't trust them not to "brick" my ECU.

Some of the members here would be able to do the updates for a small fee IIRC, Marks DTM for example.

The fee might be quite high when kcl is in Finland, though - air fare would be a killer ;)

Only DBW Engine ECUs are able to accept updates, and they make no discernible difference IME. Most cars I see are on the latest version anyway.

Gearbox updates are a different matter.

I suppose the OP could keep an eye out for someone breaking a 2.6 auto with the latest firmware and see if the seller would mine posting the ECU?

iirc the only? update to the engine was to amend cruise control 'resume' operation?

Yes, I vaguely remember something about that.

Tech 2 session with one of the guys on here preferably. As usual, don't bother with dealers. (I know you probably know, but just in case ;) )
