I have been having many problems with my BT internet speed. I had an engineer round last week and he changed the ancient connection box where the line comes into the house. He told me that if I get further problems, I should change the extension line/socket. Needlees to say, the internet has become unbearably slow again, so today I bought a new cable and ADSL extension socket. I have connected the cable to the new BT socket thus:
2: Yellow
3: Green
4: Red
5: Black

...and the same with the new ADSL extension socket.

What have I got? Nothing.

I did get the web up at one point, but with the phone on the extension as dead as a dodo with no dial tone, I had another fiddle and now I have nothing. Where am I going wrong?

On the new extension sockets the incoming line (two wires) should be connected to terninals 2 and 5. So the two of the 4 wires will be the line. From memory you should get 60v dc across the 2 wires. All other wires are unneccesary, unless you have shared service etc.

You using rather alarm cable? Thats gonna break things up.

Whether you can get away with just 2 wires depends on a lot of things. Happy to discuss at length...

TB ex-BT internal and overhead 'engineer' (in loose sense ), and SFIO back in the 90s...

Jaime, I bought a Broadband DIY Extension Kit from Homebase. "all you need to install an extension socket for your broadband & telephone connections up to 15m"

It still doesn't work even after disconnecting all but wires 2 & 5.

A broadband extension needs to be (I'd need to confirm) Cat3 or higher.

The wiring code I've got for the old phone cable would suggest either it's the wrong way round or it's talking about the plug from the latch side.

Terminal 3 is the bell wire, not really needed nowadays.

Jaime is right (obviously) in that twisted pair cable should be used and it's only pins 2 & 5 that need connecting.

So you're saying that this cable sold at Homebase to wire an extension will never work?

So you're saying that this cable sold at Homebase to wire an extension will never work? 

Proper telephone cable is in a "twisted pair" configuration in order to reduce noise, interference, and signal losses.
You really need to ditch the alarm cable before you start looking for a fault elsewhere.

I have a filtered master face plate if you want it, filter the ADSL at in the incoming bit and idealy have the router next to it.

I often use Cat5 for phone extensions as its cheap and plentiful plus I have quite a bit of the STP type.

Good idea to ditch that and use the proper stuff 
Just checked my old paperwork ........... 3 is indead used for the old bell.
Just use 2 and 5 and use (as mentioned on here) twisted pairs if possible

Yes and when I had FTTC installed the tosser didn't bother connecting 3 back up so my original dial type phone with a proper BELL didn't work!
