Hello everyone,

Firstly purchased second hand Omega 3.0 V6 on a T plate at 74000 miles good service history in January this year.

Now the problem went to work Monday morning from Kingston Surrey to Cambridge finished job at 2.30 am went to start car and flat Battery

Green flag came out and got me started everything was ok, got home around 5.30 am switched off the checked to see if she would start again sure thing sprung into life, oh well must've left summit on.....

No work Tuesday went out to car at 5pm just to check if she would start an sure enough sprung into life ok I think all is good.....

Wednesday morning off to Cambridge again started first time all was good on the way to work no obvious problems apart from noticing the automatic gear box seemed to be hunting for finnal gear at high revs during kick down and overtake strange I thought.

Wednesday evening 6pm left work heading back to Kingston Surrey all was good for about 40 miles then power steering begins to get heavy, then Battery warning light comes on, then temperature warning light comes on and temperature hit 100 for less than 5 mins before I could get her on to the off ramp hard shoulder on the A1m to Luton airport (hopefully no permanent damage done pipes seem all ok expansion tank has dumped its contents fingers crossed)

Green flag checked and confirmed its the auxillary belt plus the tensioner/pulley.
Looked at pictures of what the pulley should look like and mine is missing the v knotched wheel must've completely shattered causing the belt to shred up. Little bit of plastic scuffage to the cover behind said pulley wheel assuming I'm right that would be the timming belt cover.

So my questions are,

1. Have I done more damage for the less than 5 minutes to get her safe fingers crossed hopefully not.
2. How easy is it to replace and any special tools needed to do this myself.
3. Is there anything else aside form the obvious that whilst I'm there and she's all in pieces I should also check condition of and or change.

Thanks in advance for any help on this matter of urgencie.

Buy the tensioner pulley on it`s own. Part # 9157962. Just undo nut, remove cup & pulley & replace

Sounds like Aux belt has come off when the Battery Light came on, now the Water pumps not turning  causing the Engine to overheat, did the car die at any point or did you just park up, doesn't take long to do the Head Gaskets in this scenario.

Whats happened since, does it start, run correctly, if so any water loss or leaks or oil loss etc.

Thanks fella read that on here and thought I would try that but still got to do the belt aswell and I ain't very mechanically minded, give me a bit of carpet or any type of flooring and I'm in my element when it comes to engines I'm at a complete loss at where to even start.
Got a price from the garage and she's in there now it was £225 to do belt and pulley which I thought seemed a fair price.

Around £50 for belt & pulley. 10-15 minute job

Thats exactly what it is belt is shreded pulley wheel tensioner is non exsistant and must've shatterd.
Car didn't die and just checked on google maps the distance from roundabout to roundabout and its 1.9m less than 2 minutes, so as I came onto the A1M from the 505 the PS got slightly heavy so I prepared to pull off at the next junction as I could see it approaching on the sat nav, then at around the halfway point the battery light came on and then the temp gauge started climb, so I would say less than a mile before it hit top end and by that time I was stopped and shut down.
When the recovery vehicle got to me and I was able to see under the front of the car the puddle of water was located more on the drivers side and close to the front of the car which I'm hopefull it was just the water from the expansion tank which is almost empty.
Once home recovery guy had to jump pack me so I could park up which worked first time and the engine sound seemed to me to be as normal idle speed seemed to be normal.
Since then I have had it recovered to a garage for repair cost of repair for belt and pulley tensioner wheel is £225 seems fair.
Recovery guy had to jump pack me to get it on the truck started first time and seemed to be running fine no big clouds of smoke and sounded smooth.
Fingers crossed I haven't done any permanent damage.

Fingers crossed on the Head Gasket side then, when you say 'expansion tank has dumped its contents' how much water are we talking about?, how much water have you had to put back in, or have you not checked that, was there any water around the water pump location or under it?, any brown dried up spray marks around the pump / tensioner area. Any spilt hoses any where.

Just to confirm, did the Batt light come on before the overheating or other way round?

The price quoted seems high to me, but thats probably around what a Garage would try and charge, would hate to think they do the work and you still have issues, then start charging more for coolant leaks etc.

Edit: Stupid question I know, but you did have enough water in it in the first place.

That may well be the case in your eyes, but fir me I took 1 look at it and thought to myself get that wrong and its gonna cost more than the £225 quoted price.

Thanks Zirk but checked fluids sunday morning and water was maxed out oil maxed blah blah blah every fluid was at the top.

And to confirm the Batt light came on first flickered a couple of times then was on solid.
Could not see any sign of water or trace elements around the water pump and I didn't top up the water but there was a little left in the expansion tank but only a small ammount.
Could not see any split houses anywhere so fingers crossed.

Some water left in the Expansion Tank, ok good. I suppose you've pretty much committed to the repair as the cars already towed to the garage, shame you couldn't put it to one side and get one of the Mobile Mechanics on here to do the job, or do it yourself with some help from other members on here.

Hopefully it will back on the road soon.

Thanks Zirk that would've been more helpfull but i panicked a bit as I have work booked in and need to get mobile tooty sharp, i will most definetly be consulting with one of the mechanics as you have mentioned and maybe if they want to chime in I would like someone with the knowledge of the car to do a full service and give it a good going over to keep me mobile.

Damn it do you do anything else, I know nothing about cars apart from where to put fuel oil water and other fluids when they break down I'm at a loss. Thank heavens for forums never knew this exsisted until I searched.
The only forums I usually take part in are flooring related as thats my field of expertise.

can I add to the above? ...........

Your garage is taking the pi$$. Aside from the cost of the actual parts (around £20+vat fro the belt using Trade Club - no idea of the pulley) but they can both be done in under an hour. Check he's not trying to kid you the the axillary/fan belt is anyway connected to the cam belt! He's taking you for a ride & I'd push the car off his garage fore court.  >:(
