No compression on cylinder 1?
« on: 01 March 2012, 15:10:08 »

Hi all,

My dad has a facelift 2.5 cdx estate. He's been suffering bad tickover etc.

He's just had the car serviced, cam covers done and new HT leads. He's still suffering the same problem of rough idle & power. He's had it in a local garage he trusts and the mechanic tells him that:

There is no compression in cylinder 1, but No.3 is fine.
The spark is very weak on No. 1, rest are fine.

He believes that it is the dis pack and is sorting out a replacement.

Question:  What would cause the lack of compression?

TIA :y

If it has run with a misfire it is quite possible that cylinder 1 is suffering "bore wash" and not making good compression because the oil film on the cylinder bore has been washed of by excessive fuel. I would squirt a teaspoon of oil into the spark plug hole and try again.

It's not impossible that the coil pack has suffered due to the oil in the plug wells.

I suppose it could be bore wash. But if compression is zero I'd suspect something more sinister than a dis pack :-\

So what would cause poor sparking on No.1 only?  Assuming the cylinder has suffered bore wash ???

Agreed. If it really is Zero something is badly wrong. I read that compression was down. :y

Coil pack insulation break down around the turret for no.1 plug lead would cause that spark to be weak.

Dis pack or lead ;) The diagnostic process is reasonably sound :y Did he try a drop of oil in the cylinder and re-test the compression to confirm bore wash?

Sorry if this is a dumb question....is a dispack & coil pack the same thing? :-\

Basically, yes :y

Could get more technical but no need here ;)

Apparently yes, although it didn't last long. That's when he checked the spark. No.1 is very weak, yet on No.3 he had it roughly 3 inches away and it jumped across to the block no problem.

Yep. With a drop of oil compression returned so new dis pack should sort it nicely :y

If its DIS pack then the spark would be down on 1 and 4....
