Pumping out water ? Help !
« on: 01 March 2012, 17:37:03 »

Only did a run of 16 miles today and the temp gauge was sitting high again , 3 miles from home the gauge went into the red for the second time this month ? All steam coming out from under the bonnet and when i opened the bonnet the header tank was gushing water out the top , with bubbling through the system . There are no leaks , just this water pressurising in the header tank . Since removing the air con it seems this has been the ongoing problem so was thinking is it the HBV thats causing problems as ive read somewhere i can disconnect the HBV altogether but would that stop the over heating ? The heater is hot and all pipes are hot , no gunk mayo anywhere either . Fans are cutting in but dont seem to be keeping the engine cool unless its on idle  :(

Would that cause the header tank to boil over martin ? If im driving around town it keeps cool ish but everytime i go on a run it just boils over ...very strange .

Rad was flushed Albs , ,,, if its the head gasket i wont be fixing it  :-X

Rad core blocked with dirt/flies etc on the outside ? Fans definitely working as they should ?  If your not losing coolant then the HBV should be ok. Water pump might be suspect.

Fans working as they should at correct temp , i stuck the car in sports mode for 10 sec on the dual carridgeway and its from that point the car over heated if that makes any difference  :-\

Anyway to check the water pump is faulty ?

Im thinking inneficient rad due to crap and flies etc. restricting airflow,or water pump past its best.

Can the water pump be replaced with just the auxilery belt off ? Can i rule out the thermostat if the pipes are all hot and heater is working ok ?

My best "guess" also blocked radiator, but more likely knackered water pump.

Best way to check is to remove and replace water pump - believe can be done without removing cam belt cover but fiddly - easier to take cam belt cover off, particularly if water pump tight in housing (usually needs persuading out with a mallet!)

If you have flushed the system, Imo you have pushed the sludge from the engine  into the radiator.

If your car runs ok until the thermostat opens (97 ish) then the temp goes through the roof, you have a blocked up radiator  ;)

Iirc, as the stat opens, it directs the water threw the radiator.
If it can't flow, it boils back up out of the water bottle  :(

I know this because I had a bunged up heater matrix and after flushing, it happened to me  :'( :'(

Remove your radiator and pour in some fenox central heating flush.  Leave the rad flat and let it soak in for a day or so.  Flush out with a hosepipe and watch the crap come out  :y

Stick it back together then top up with anti freeze  :y

Thats whats happening and seems the faster i drive the car the hotter it gets but wont cool down ....not enough airflow through the rad "possibly" ? I just want to keep costs down and try the cheapest option open for now , the rad has been drained twice now and everytime its been drained no sludge has come out and it drans freely and clean... i havent used any fenox or rad cleaner in the system as there was no sludge issues but i can try that if you advise  ;)

Does the rad have to come off ? Just thinking about blocking the pipes off if i can , then filling it with the rad flush  :-\ then again i wont be able to reverse flush it  ::)

Yes, pull it out and lay it flat on the ground in you back garden.
I blocked up the holes with a few poly bags and some gaffa tape.

As mentioned before, leave the fernox or similar stuff (I got mine from B&Q) as long as you can  :y
