Rough running
« on: 03 March 2012, 18:04:38 »

Hi All,
A few weeks ago car started running really rough under load, and did not sound right on tickover.
not really missing but sounding different if you know what I mean.
Did paperclip test and no codes.
After a few days it got gradually worse (still no codes) it did not and still doesnt cut out at any time, the best way i can describe it is like driving a turbo diesel with a knackered turbo (Yes I once owned a mondeo). When driving it just has no go as if its not running on all cylinders, but it doesnt miss on tick over.
I called on Elite Pete (Cheers mate) and he changed the DIS pack and plugs but it wasnt any better, so I have just changed the plug leads and even though it is a bit better it still has the same symptoms but at 4000 rpm it hunts really bad.
I disconnected a few things under bonnet to make sure nothing was loose etc but to no avail,
The Egr is leaking slightly and Pete suggested blanking this off, which I have done and whilst the hunting at 4k has now gone it still has no go in it!
Any help on this would be greatfully appreciated and thanks in advance     Des
P.S it does the same on lpg as it does on petrol and i disconnected the lpg to see if this was a culprit but it does exactly the same.

assuming there is no oil in your plug wells..

first I would try a compression test..

then I would check common components between normal fuel and lpg..

sensors and ecu..  if I were you I would find a close member running a healthy miggy and try to swap some sensors like maf, lambda, throttle position and cam sensor..which wont take long time.. if these wont help, more trials will be required including other sensors and electrical wiring..

Sounds to me very much like the symptoms I (and others have) had when the sound deading material in the exhaust made bid for freedom and blocked the exhaust. :-\

It does sound different, a bit muffled, I had the back box changed around 18 month ago because of the insides trying to escape, Is it common for the middle boxes to do the same?
 Thanks for the replys,
I forgot to ad that i disconnected the maf, ICV, EGR etc whilst running and it did throw up codes for these when i paper clipped this afternoon.
Even though it is not now hunting at 4k since I blocked off the EGR it seems to run a lot rougher, its hard to describe but its as if its being held back! There is just no go in it.

I have started up this morning and it is taking a lot longer to fire up? when it did it is running rough and now missing on tickover but this stops when it gets warm, took around the block and as soon as you accelerate there is just nothing there.
looking at the suggestions from earlier if it was MAF etc surely these would throw up codes? Do the middle boxes have wadding in? just a thought as I am clutching at straws now   Thanks

Im pretty sure centre boxes have wadding in,and this really does resemble symptoms of blocked exhaust imo. The wadding should start appearing in the back box.Shine a torch in there and see if theres any wadding visible.
