Darn boiler again
« on: 03 March 2012, 21:38:24 »

I can't be bothered to dig out the old thread. Not in the mood I'm in anyway.  >:(

We had an engineer round mid-week to look at our Vokera combi boiler which continually needs to have the reset button pressed (pretty much once a day). I was out while the engineer was here but he told SWMBO that he couldn't find any obvious fault, but he did service it. We will be upgrading our boiler later this year as we are having some building work done (hopefully!). The engineer said it wasn't worth spending money on such an old boiler (it's about 13 years old) and that we should just keeping using the reset button for now. ::)

Needless to say, the reset button no longer seems to work, so we have no hot water or heating. >:( >:(

Forecast for this neck of the woods tomorrow? Heavy rain, cold winds and the possibility of wet snow tomorrow night. ::) ::) :'(

Grrr! Bad mood? Too right! ;)

That's not old :o :o I reckon mine's nearer 30 years old and I've been told by several engineers not to change it unless I really have to ;) ;)

Sorry to hear of the issues though

I think ours must be something like that, it is a back boiler with a gas fire that sticks out the front, I 'broke' a similar one some years ago so have a selection of spares should they be needed....Been trouble free so far....... :y :y

Hi Nickbat
Had this problem with ours about the same age, runs cold, will not fire up, and pressing the restart button .
serviced with the gas annually. but always had one of the above Gremlins pop up again.
Finaly the the last Guy who serviced it  last year (did a pressurre test in/out with a hydrometer like thing  u shaped glass !! :-[ and installed a small new circuit board. (part no- if i find it--------)
System has been great since last year. :y  hope this makes sense ;D ;D
cheers LoL

Have you the same boiler? Mine's a Maxin 24e. If it is, I may take a punt on getting the new circuit board if you find the part number.  :y

Mine is 30 years old....i descalled it a few months ago, which has certainly helped it. I too am a tad concerned about changing it, as you always seem to hear about problems with modern boilers, esp combi boilers. The downside with not changing it, is how long it takes it initially to get any heat up and therefore higher gas bills.
My neighbour has just swapped out his 30yo back boiler for a combi boiler. So i'm going to check with him on savings on his gas bill over the next few months  ;)

My Mum's 20 year old conventional boiler kept shutting down, and only started up again when the reset button was pressed.  The gas engineer scratched his head and muttered about trying a new PCB, but at £180 plus labour I felt that we needed to be sure that was the problem!!

In the meantime I noted the part number of the PCB and kept an eye on ebay, and within a few days landed a brand new PCB for £25!!  :y I fitted it myself and so far (Touch wood!!  ::)) it's worked just fine!!  8)

So it turned out that the gas guy was right but we saved over £200!!  :y

I have a Potterton Suprima boiler, so taking out the PCB to resolder the shitty joints, and rebuild tracks used to be a 6 monthly task (no point replacing PCB, replacements are every bit as shite.

Now, I think I'm at a point, touch wood, where all the high current tracks have been either built up, or patched out, and most of the joints reworked.  Been good, apart from a failed gas valve 3 or 4 years back, for 5 or 6 years.  Its 11yrs old, original one fitted by builders.

No problem, Laird. By chance, SWMBO spoke to someone last night who came up with exactly the same solution as you, so it must be worth a punt.

Indeed, I've just ordered the part.  :y

I found when I swapped in 1996 from a floor standing boiler installed in 1977 to a wall mounted Potterton Prima fitted in a utility room extension that my gas bill was almost halved. I was surprised by the difference.

I've had to replace the boiler controller PCB once and have also had a problem with a blue tit blocking the flue. I have 2 x 2 way Honeywell valves to control the central heating and hot water circuits as this is mean't to be more reliable than a 3 way valve, but I went though spell of replacing the solenoids in the 2 way valves several times where they kept failing, but touch wood they have been fine for about 10 years now.

I know several people with condensing boilers and they seem to have had quite a few problems with them.
