Is there any way without costly bits of kit to diagnose if gearbox has a fault ?

Just before Christmas I asked local garage to do a gearbox oil change (as I couldn,t be arsed to crawl around on cold concrete in the depths of winter) and I provided them with 2 x 5ltrs of Titan ATF Dexron 3 along with both sump gaskets /filter screen and new drain plug washer.

When I  collected car they have used around 7 ltrs of ATF and all other parts.Since car has been done around 6 k, gear changes are much smoother going up the box but sometimes box hangs in a higher gear when de- accelerating and then drops down with a thud almost as before fluid change.

Is it worth doing another fluid change ,I will do this 1 myself now as weather has improved,or should I be looking for damage or possible repair to something else within the box ? Would this have flagged up a fault code althhough no gearbox lights have come up.

Any advise much appreciated.

had this on my 2.2 auto...the autobox should be refilled to the plug level,then run a short distance,engaging all gears ,then topped up again with the engine running..if the car is holding on to 3rd when going down hill for a good distance,then this is normal..maybe worth checking/ topping up the gearbox again..ihmo...
