what to look for with 3.2/2.6
« on: 05 March 2012, 02:30:32 »

Hi all. Thinking of buying another Omega. This time it will be a 3.2/2.6. Are there any unique issues to these engine set ups? Do they still suffer from leaky cam covers and blowing manifold gaskets? What's the cambelt changes? I've had aa couple of the older v6's but don't know much about the later ones so any advise greatly appreciated before I blow a wedge.

Cheers

Cambelt changes and most other things the same as the early ones - 40,000 or 4 years, whichever comes first.
Cam covers will still leak if breathers not cleaned. 3.2 has an issue with bringing on fault light due to a lamda problem, which the only permanent cure for is to relocate lamda further along the exhaust. Interior is less hard wearing than earlier versions.
Hope that helps.

It's not a Lamba problem as such though. Moving the lambda cures the pre cat efficiency problem. As the fault code name suggests, it's the efficiency of the pre cat that's the issue, so don't go off buying new O2 sensors to cure the cats efficiency, is the point I'm trying to make really.
The fault code brings the engine light on on the dash, so check the bulb hasn't been removed to hide the problem. This might also hide other issues, so pedal tricking if the owner doesn't throw a wobbler will give you any engine codes and confirm the pre cat codes with 0420/0430.  3.2 seems to suffer more than 2.6.
Coil pacs seem to struggle from 80k on ime. Not helped by scuttle leaking water onto bank 2. 0300 and 0301-6 will be present for miss fires.

Other than that and the rubbish tactile finish in the interior, the rest is much the same. Head and manifold gaskets where upgraded on the face lift, so you shouldnt have issues there. There's no icv, egr, secondary air gubbins to worry about either.

Coil pacs are 80 to 120 sobs a side new though. :(

Itake it people are just welding another boss on the exhaust behind the second cats fooling the lambas?
