Water in spark plugs
« on: 07 March 2012, 10:48:32 »

I was driving along today and all of a sudden the car went dead lump like it was missing. Pulled over into a car park and popped the bonnet and noticed steam from the coil pack area. Too the coil pack out and found all 4 spark plug wells were full of water!  :o

Now, This isn't good i understand. I take it is a new head i need?  >:(

You have got a leak probably from the windscreen scuttle panel which is causing rain water to get onto the coils pack.

Remove the coil pack and dry out all plug wells..also worth looking to see if water is clear which pretty much confirms its rain water or has any coolant in it ?

I imagine it has either been raining in your area over the last few days ?

Definatley NOT head gasket mate  :y

Yeah, It rained last night/this morning but its never happened before.
I don't think i have lost any coolant either, and my temp gauge has always stayed a steady 80 apart from being stuck in traffic yesterday when it went up to just below 90.  :-\

Taste it  ;) If it's coolant it'll be as bitter as a very bitter thing if it's orange or very sweet if it's the blue, and obviously neither of the above if it's rain water.

NB TASTE it & not drink it by the bucket full cos antifreeze won't do you any good!  ;) ;) ;)

If its filled the plug wells might be worth ,after drying the well out,to take each plug out and just check it hasn,t damaged the insulation.

Put back together and sure all will be fine, although you need to find and cure the source of that water, as it will possibly happen again.

Will give it a go tomorrow, hopefully it wont be hailing.
Managed to clean the coil pack, plugs and plug holes and take her for a good spin and she seems fine so that good  :y

Thanks for every ones help, I was thinking for a minute that a big repair bill was imminent  :o

It'd be difficult for any decent penetrating oil to get between the tapers ......... WD40 isn't even a reasonable penetrating oil  ;) ;)

You'll need to get yourself something similar to one of these ..... http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=m570.l2736&_nkw=puller+wiper be careful though with the cheapest pullers because the legs will bend before separating the wiper arms form the taper spindles.  :y

Wouldn't they come off with a bit of leveridge from a flat head screw driver whilst simultaneously ''wiggling''?

Mine came off without too much fuss and there was a bit of water in one as it was missing a cap

......

Not sure where your screw driver went to help lever the arm  :-\ For stubarm wipers I've used a small adjustable on the top/bottom of the part of the arm with the taper in it, that way you have two levers ... the arm & the adjustable

I didn't need to do it on my own ones as they came off with a bit of wiggling after i lifter the wiper arm..... wouldn't he get a srew driver under the plastic that houses the screw?
