Brake Pad Warning on pads/discs that are ok...
« on: 07 March 2012, 20:20:01 »

Hi guys, as above. Keep getting this warning on the dash. I've had a visual check done by ATS and they said the pads at the front are ''full'' and the ones at the back are halfway. The discs are apparently fine too.

I wonder if I have a sensor problem.

I decided to see if an emergency stop (in a safe, deserted environment) would cure anything ''sticking'' and the warning hasn't been up since. I'm thinking that may be coincidence but maybe not?  :-\

If it is a sensor problem, any easy fixes?

Cheers guys  :y :y :y

Only the once. Surely that's not what caused it.  ;D ;D

As Jamie so eloquently put it, you need a new sensor or two. They clip to the butterfly shaped anti-rattle spring located on each pad and as the pads wear, the sensor gets closer & closer to the disc until eventually it worn though & breaks the circuit. What also happens is that the sensor gets worn through earlier than needed because the unworn lip on the edge of the disc wears the sensor through way before the pad needs replacement.
Your options are :-
two new sensors & accept that they will wear early
Dress the edge of the disc so the lip is less prominent
cut the white sensor off & join the two wires together & check your pads visually like in the old days  :y :y

Thanks for that explanation Andy  :y

Do the pads still come with that tab that ''squeals'' when the brake pads are worn? I'd rather do them visually TBH  :y

Haha not a Luddite... just don't see the point in fitting something that is maybe going to misinform me!  :y What could I do to the disc lip to aid the problem? :)

File/grind it off, but as you had to ask, I'd then say leave it alone.  ;) ;)

Has it done it since last pad change? If so, probably the prat who did it broke the sensor. Or that it was worn through, but didn't replace it.

IME, when not being handled, they are quite robust in use (and brittle as hell when you work on them)
